Brendan Schaub showed he is more than just a former NFL football player and has turned into a pretty good mixed martial arts fighter. Schaub was able to KO a tough fighter in Chase Gormley early in the first round. Mike Pierce showed he is a good 3 round fighter with another 3 round decision fight with a win over Julio Paulino. That makes 4 straight decision fights in the UFC for all you sports bettors.
Also in the preliminary MMA fights hard hitting veteran Duane Ludwig has to withdraw from his fight with Darren Elkins who scored a takedown in the first round and Ludwig's foot gets caught underneath him, and all his weight crashes down upon it, resulting in a injury to his lower leg and had to withdrawal 44 seconds into the opening round.
Vladimir Matyushenko had a hard tough fight with Eliot Marshall with a split decision for Matyushenko with a dominate takedown game. Clay Guida was much too much for Shannon Gugerty as his aggressiveness and was able to use his fast pressing forward style of fighting as Guida was able to mount and lock in an arm-triangle choke at 3:40 of the second round.
It took Cheick Kongo until the third round to dispose of Paul Buentello which really showed how he is still a second rate fighter. Kongo is still a one dimensional fighter that really needs to work on his ground game.
Junior dos Santos showed despite being on the smaller side of the heavyweight division that he has speed and power. And that showed versus Gabriel Gonzaga as he was able to use his speed and power to KO Gabriel Gonzaga early in the first round. He now moves in line for a possible future heavyweight title fight.
Jon Jones proved that he is a force ot be reckoned with in the UFC as he was about to KO Brandon Vera mid way through the first round. Jones lands a hard elbow right on the right eye of his foe. Vera is hurt and he rolls away and turtles to avoid contact. Jones finishes with punches as Dean calls a halt to the bout at the 3:19 mark.
