UFC Fight Night 13 Results and Recap
UFC Betting Review:

UFC Betting at SportbetOut of all the UFC Fight Nights, this was by far the best free UFC events on Spike TV. Every fight was exciting with some great knockouts and submissions. Underdog fighter Anthony Johnson came out charging at UFC reality show finalist Tommy Speer, and rocked him with a punch that sent him crumpling to the ground like a sack of potatoes. The next two were also very quick KO’s by TUF fighter George Sotiropoulos  and Clay Guida. Last years TUF finalist winner Manvel Gamburyan easily disposed of inexperienced fighter Jeffrey Cox via submission (Guillotine Choke) in the first round and American Top Team Brazilian Jujitsu black belt Marcus Aurelio beat Ryan Roberts with an armbar in 16 seconds, which I thought could not be done, but was a thing of beauty.

The best knockout of the night came by James Irvin in just 8 second versus his fight with Houston Alexander with a fake and then a Superman punch that sent him to the ground. Though this may have been a premature stoppage by the ref, Houston Alexander’s stock as a fighter is rapidly diminishing. His lack of ground game and rink experience is apparent as he needs to mature as a fighter.

The Nathan Diaz versus Kurt “Batman” Pellegrino fight was the best fight of the night as the first round went to Kurt Pellegrino who peppered Diaz with numerous shots. He even had him in a crucifix and was punching his head for a brief period, but it was Diaz’s hip movement and ability to deflect and escape certain situations that made him survive the fight. The second round had Diaz being able to counter punch, and once this fight went to the ground, this time Diaz was able to pull off a perfect triangle choke that no one could be able to get out of.

Matt Hamill showed the world his striking ability was vastly improved. Before his striking was awkward as he stood up too tall, and was not able to extend his arms for maximum power, but in his fight with Tim Boetsch he dominated the fight in every aspect before KOing him in the second round. Has Hamill improved that much or was Boetsch’s victory over David Heath a fluke. I think it is a combination of both, but Hamill’s fight game has definitely gotten better.

Thiago Alves made quick work of top ten UFC welterweight Karo Parisyan with a 34 second KO over the Armenian. Though this may have been another premature stoppage Alves knee sent Parisyan followed by a number of punches to his head. Though it looked like he was dazed and defending, the ref stopped the fight. Now Parisyan’s chances at a title shot have all, but vanished.

Gray Maynard used his superior wrestling skills to out hustle Frank Edgar with a 3 round unanimous decision. Edgar was no match for Maynard’s skill, and his wresting at MSU was much better than Edgar’s wrestling at Clarion University of Pennsylvania.

The main event was a great matchup of UFC lightweight fighters. Kenny Florian used his elbows, and pressing attack to rush in, and overwhelm Joe Lauzon, but Lauzon countered, and went for hell hooks, and leg locks. By the end of the first round Lauzon was gassed. By the start of the second round Florian continued to press the attack until the ref stopped the fight at 3:28 of the second round.

UFC Fight Night 13 had many great matches but some of the mismatched were apparent like the Marcus Aurelio and Clay Guida fight. The live telecast showcased some up and coming fighters like Manvel Gamburyan, Gray Maynard, Matt Hamill, and Matt Hamill which legitimized some TUF reality show fighters, but some fighters like Tom Speer and Houston Alexander were big disappointments.
