UFC Betting Review:

Diaz Penn after fight During the UFC 137 weigh ins, Tyson Griffin failed to make the featherweight limit, coming  three pounds over the limit. Griffin was fined 25 percent of his earnings and the bout will take place at a catch weight of 148lb. The weight cut was not a wise weight cut as he came into the fight and was KO’ed early in the first by Bart Palaszewski.

If the shocker of the night, Brandon Vera won a decision over Eliot Marshall. Marshall broke Vera’s arms in the third round with an arm bar but Vera fought it off and won a three round decision as most people thought Marshall lost the fight.

Also in the preliminary fights Donald Cerrone made quick work of Dennis Siver with an early first round rear naked choke at just 2:22 of the first round.

The UFC pay per view kicked off with one of the best featherweight in the world making his UFC debut in Hatsu Hioki.  He had a hard fight in his UFC debut as he faced off with tough George Roop. Could Hioki reverse the UFC jinx of poor showings by Japanese fighters in the UFC?

Roy Nelson Mirko Filipovic TKO (Punches) 3 1:30
Matt Mitrione Cheick Kongo Decision (Unanimous) 3 5:00
B.J. Penn Nick Diaz Decision (Unanimous) 3 5:00

The fight was back and forth and near the end of the first round Roop is warned for grabbing Hioki’s shorts in the clinch. In the second round Hioki is able to gain full mounts but Roop gets out and lands a few strikes as the round closes.

The third round had Roop getting the early takedown and near the end of the third round Hioki catches Roop in the face with a foot and referee Rosenthal warns him to watch the upkicks. In the end Hioki wins a tough split decision victory in his UFC debut to break the Japanese curse of highly touted Japanese fighters.

The Mirko Filipovic versus Roy Nelson fight had Cro Cop putting on a good fight in the first round. Cro Cop looked good and is able to land on Nelson a left hand, followed by grazing Nelson with a high kick to win the first round.
In the second round Nelson lands an overhand right however Cro Cop lands a dozen or sp punches to the body and head of Nelson. With 40 seconds left, Nelson gets his crucifix and lands 15 or 20 short left hands to Cro Cop’s face to win the round. In the third round Nelson lands a straight right hand and then Nelson pounces and lands heavy punches from back mount until referee Steve Mazzagatti stop the fight at 1:30 of round three.

The first round between Cheick Kongo versus Matt Mitrione was boring as neither fighter engaged and both fighters just circles around each other till the bell rang but Mitrione might have one the round for more activity and for pinning Kongo against the cage. In the second round Mitrione came out with more activity and Mitrione backs Kongo up with a combination and hits him with a right uppercut.  Basically Kongo is running away from Mitrione the entire fight and not willing to engage.

The third round seems to wake Kongo up as he is more active and lands some takedowns and more strikes. In the end, the judges score the bout 30-27, 30-28 and 29-28, all for the winner by unanimous decision Cheick Kongo in what I thought was a robbery.

The main even has BJ Penn fighting Nick Diaz. Penn comes up early with a left jab and scores with another bunch of punches in the clinch. Penn’s strikes are hard, fast and accurate in the first 90 seconds. Penn is unable to sink both hooks in and loses the position, moving to side control and then half-guard on Diaz. The round ends with Penn landing the better shots to win the first round which starts to swell Diaz’s face.

In the second round, Diaz lands right hands to the body, lefts to the face, while Penn tries to circle out with uppercuts. Daiz continues to throw and increase his punch count. A left hook rocks Penn and Diaz is relentless with his striking landing on Penn whenever he gets in range. Penn is hurt and Diaz lands dozens of punches to the body and face. Penn is bleeding from his nose and Penn has a nasty mouse under his left eye as Diaz wins the second round.

In the third round Diaz continues to keep up the furious striking pace. Penn’s left eye is totally swollen shut. Penn tags Diaz with a left hook, a right straight. Diaz sticks Penn with a long left and Penn answers with a nice right. Another straight left from Diaz has Penn backing up. Near the end, Diaz gets in close and finishes with rib strikes to Penn’s body. Diaz raises his hands in victory at the horn while Penn returns to his corner. Two judges score the bout 29-28, while the third has it 29-27, all in favor of the winner by unanimous decision, Nick Diaz.
