Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar Retain UFC Belts at UFC 136

UFC Betting Review:
The UFC 136 preliminaries kicked off with a free broadcast on Facebook. Mike Massenzio won a three unanimous round decision over Steve Cantwell and Aaron Simpson the two time NCAA All-American wrestler won a three round unanimous decision over Eric “Red” Schafer.
The third Facebook fight had China’s first BJJ brown belt Zhang Tie Quan and the best mixed martial artist in China taking on Darren Elkins. The Carlson Gracie fighter Elkins dominates with superior grappling advantage to win a three round unanimous decision. The last Facebook fight had The Mexicutioner Joey Beltran fighting Stipe Miocic. Beltran looked fat and out of shape and looked like he has one too many burritos. Miocic edged out with the better striking to win a three unanimous round decision victory.
After the Facebook fights there were the free fights on Spike TV. The first fight was between Showtime Anthony Pettis versus Jeremy Stephen. Pettis who is best known for the kick around the world had a tough fight with Stephen. Both fighters fought a close battle but Pettis landed the better shots and got more takedowns to win a three unanimous round decision victory for his first UFC win.

The last prelim fight on Spike TV was Demian Maia versus Jorge Santiago. Maia the best grappler in the middleweight division was fighting Santiago who 2007 Strikeforce Middleweight Tournament Winner and 2008 Sengoku Middleweight Grand Prix Champion but has not done so well in the UFC. Again Santiago did not show the audience the fighter he really is as Maia used his grappling to control Santiago on the ground losing all three rounds, giving Maia three round unanimous decision victory.
In one of the best UFC pay per view cards in a while Melvin Guillard fought Joe Lauzon. If Guillard wins he might have the4 next shot at the UFC lightweight title. In the opening bell Lauzon lands a number of left hooks that wobbles Guillard and Lauzon gets a rear naked choke and Guillard is forced to tap out just 47 seconds into the first round.
Next up was Leonard Garcia versus Nam Phan. Phan was faster and used his speed to hit Garcia to win the first round. With vicious blows to the body in the second round that wobbles Garcia and as the round ends he hurts Garcia again. Garcia down on points tries to increase the pace but Phan wins by a three round unanimous decision victory.
Next up Chael Sonnen versus Brian Stann. Sonnen uses his wrestling to get the takedown and takes Stann’s back and wins the first round with position. In the second round Sonnen once again gets the takedown and in side control gets the arm-triangle choke and Stann is forced to tap out.
The UFC featherweight title was up for bid as José Aldo faced Kenny Florian for the title. Florian comes out and lands a number of good shots in the first round and gets a couple of takedowns but Aldo gets right back up. Near the end of the round Florian lands a level elbow in the clinch to win the round. The second round was close but Aldo landed more power shots.
In the third round Aldo starts to utilize and land lower leg kicks and takes Florian down and the round end with Aldo winning for the takedown and controlling the fight in half guard and in Florian’s guard. In the fourth round Aldo starts to land vicious leg kicks and Aldo misses a jumping knee and a right hand at the horn to win the fourth round. In the final round Aldo kicks out Florian’s leg that sends him to the ground and lands into Florian’s half guard and then takes mount. As the round ends Aldo gets his back off the fence, grazes Florian with a combo, misses with a knee and one final high kick as all three judges see it 49-46 for the winner by unanimous decision.
The much anticipated trilogy between Frankie Edgar versus Gray Maynard concluded. Edgar starts off by taking Maynard back but Maynard gets outs and lands a huge right upper cut that wobbles him and than Maynard drops the champion again than another uppercut and a flurry of punches and sustains a severe beating as the round ends for a 10 to 8 round for Maynard.
In the second round Maynard looks like he punched himself out and has he hands low. Edgar lands right hands, body shots and leg kicks that Edgar sends Maynard stumbling with a one-two, finished by a strong left hook.
The third round starts out with Edgar landing a one two combo and both fighters trade takedowns. Edgar steps inside and drills Maynard with an overhand right and as the round ends Edgar lands a leg kick to win the round.
The fourth round starts with more leg kicks from Edgar. Edgar lands a huge uppercut and Maynard falls and gets back up but Edgar lands a pair of brutal right hooks. Maynard falls to his knees and Edgar lands three or four clean left hands before the ref stops the fight at 3:54 of the fourth round and Frankie Edgar retains his UFC lightweight title.
The next UFC event will be UFC 137: St-Pierre vs. Conthat will be held by the Ultimate Fighting Championship on October 29, 2011 at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada
