GSP Punishes Dan Hardy and Carwin KO's Mir With Ease
UFC 111 Play by Play
Wow Shane Carwin is for real. He still has not been tested as he has never gone into the second round in his mixed martial arts career. He dismantled Frank Mir in the first round and hit him with 6 straight upper cuts hast sent Mir to the ground. From there, Carwin pounded out Mir until he lay prone and motionless, forcing the referee to intervene.
Carwin now is the interim UFC heavy weight champion and will fight Brock Lesnar to unify the heavyweight title.
In the main event Dan Hardy put on a game performance but was clearly outmatched as UFC welterweight champion punished hardy for all five rounds. Twice in the fight it look like Georges St Pierre might have snapped Hardy’s arm with an arm bar and kimura but Hardy fought off the submission attempts. Hardy had a game heart but was clearly outmatched for his lack of skill.
Ben Saunders also showed a game fight as a last minute replacement for Thiago Alves but like the GSP fight was clearly outmatched in all aspect of the fight. All three official judges see the contest 30-27 for the winner by unanimous decision, Jon Fitch.
Even though Kurt Pellegrino won the submission of the night over Fabricio Camoes with a rear naked choke the person that should have won the award was Rousimar Palhares who applied a vicious heel hook over Tomasz Drwal who screams and taps out at 45 seconds of the first round. Drwal limps out of the cage under his own power but he must have torn his ligaments in his knee.
Matt Brown showed his lucky streak was over in the UFC as he faced Ricardo Almeida who clearly outclasses Brown with ground skills. Almeida secures a body triangle and works for a rear-naked choke. The hold is deep and a bloody beaten Brown taps at 3:30 of round two.
The 6-foot-5, 265-pound Carwin on Saturday picked up a $65,000 bonus for “Knockout of the Night” after he knocked out Frank Mir 3:48 into round one.
EliteXC veteran Jared Hamman and Rodney Wallace won $65,000 bonuses for “Fight of the Night" for their back and forth battle.
Kurt Pellegrino earned a $65,000 “Submission of the Night” bonus after he stopped fellow Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Fabricio Camoes with a second-round rear-naked choke. Camoes met his demise 4:20 into round two.
The next UFC event will be UFC Fight Night 21: Florian vs. Gomi: also referred to as UFC Fight Night 21 that will be held in on March 31, 2010 at Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina. This event will be broadcast live on SpikeTV and serve as the lead-in program for The Ultimate Fighter: Team Liddell vs. Team.
