UFC - TUF 7 Finale

TUF 7 Finale Betting at BetEDJeremy Horn may be popular by many hardcore MMA Internet fans but his game is slowly slipping and after over 100 mixed martial arts fights it may be time for him to retire. Horn is known to be a good submission grappler but when he fights a really good grappler he will lose. This was the exact case as ADCC submission champion Dean Lister used his superior grappling skills to take Horn on to the ground. Once this fight hit the ground, Lister transitioned from submission attempt to submission attempt. Working from half-butterfly, Lister attempts and fails an omaplata but eventually he sinks in a choke when Lister sweeps and pulls guard when Horn tries to scramble again but is caught on a deep guillotine and has to tap out. With four loses in Horn’s last five fights this might mean the end for his career.

Matt Arroyo tries to avenge his earlier loss to hard hitting Matt Brown as he comes out firing and cutting Brown with faster and more assertive striking. At the end of the first round he cuts Brown as he is bleeding profusely from his nose. Down on the judges score cards, Brown comes out in the second round with more aggression. Brown takes down an arrogant trash talking Arroyo onto the fence and really rains down a vicious ground-and-pound. Herb Dean steps in and stops the fight. As we stated in our MMA blog this would be a great UFC underdog pick to bet on, as he was a +135 by most online sportsbooks.

Two heavy hitters come up next as Marvin Eastman and Andrew McFedries come out banging. Well for at least 1 minute and 8 seconds that is. That’s all it took for McFedries to punch out Eastman’s lights.

The next fight has Josh Burkman fighting Dustin Hazelett. Hazelett uses his superior grappling skills as Burkman is unable to do anything on the ground. Hazelett applies a deep omaplata. He escapes that but is now caught in a rear-naked choke then a D'arce. Burkman escapes and as the first round ends he has no answer for Hazelett’s game. As the second round starts Hazelett tires to pull guard but Burkman pins him into the cage. Hazelett than hits Burkman with a right head kick and from there Hazelett sneaks over Burkman’s right shoulder and applies an armbar. Burkman taps out with just ten seconds left in the second round. Burkman did not look good and the question remains if Burkman is really any good or has he been over hyped up by the UFC marketing machine as a better fighter than he really is. Hazelett win a great underdog pick against a lackluster favorite from the sportsbooks.

As the televised fights air on Spike TV the first live match was between Dante Rivera a Renzo Gracie fighter under Ricardo Alemida and Matt Riddle square off. This is Riddle’s first official MMA fight and the fight starts off in a clinch battle for the entire first round. The second round is much the same but as the round ends, Riddle almost catches Rivera in an armbar but he manages to escape. The third round has Dante trying to apply the rubber guard on Riddle but Riddle gets out. The third round ends with Riddle mounting Rivera. Riddle won his first MMA fight and looks to have a bright future in MMA at only 22 years old.

Next up Jeremy Stephens had his hands full against Spencer “The King” Fisher as both Iowa fighters came out swinging but as Stephan’s tries to take Fisher down, he pulls him into his guard instead. Fisher’s aggressive ground and pound take its toll on Stephens throughout the first round and Fisher takes mount and than his back but Stephens gets out. The second round is dominated by Fisher’s standup and once Fisher gets side control he administers a good ground and pound attack. The bell sounds with another round won by Fisher. Stephens comes out aggressive in the third round but Fisher eventually mounts Stephens but Stephens gets out. The round ends with Stephens trying to apply a Guillotine Choke on Fisher but the fight ends. All three UFC judges score the fight 29 to 28 for Fisher.

After two loses in his last three fights, Diego Nightmare Sanchez needsa good show to remain in title contention versus US Marine Luigi Fioravanti who is coming off two straight wins. Fioravanti comes in as a huge underdog at +450. As the fight starts Sanchez comes out very aggressive and controls the stand up throughout the entire first round. In the second round Diego lands with a hard right hand and takes top position and applies a kimura in half guard but Fioravanti gets out. Both fighter’s trade shots but as the second round ends, Diego is clearly ahead due to better striking. Fioravanti’s effective sprawl nullifies Diegos ground attack but Sanchez has way better stand up on this day as he lands a vicious left head kick and a knee to the head and he than pounds him out.

In the most controversial Ultimate Fighter series ever, Jesse Taylor who made it to the finals is not allowed to fight in the TUF 7 Finale due to his alcoholic rampage in Las Vegas. Instead CB Hollaway gets to fight Amir Sadollah to avenge his semi finals loss. CB starts off by taking down Sadollah and takes side control and Amir Sadollah applies an arm bar which makes CB tap. Amir Sadollah wins the six figure contract as the underdog.

The main event had Kendall Grove taking on the troubled Evan Tanner who has battled alcohol abuse in the past but is not looking to make a comeback into the UFC. Tanner starts off by taking Grove down but Grove gets up and knees Tanner to cut him. As Tanner goes for a single leg Grove lands a vicious knee. Tanner is able to take Grove down but is reversed and Kendall takes Tanner’s back with one hook in. Tanner gets out and Grove lands nice up kick to the top of Tanner’s head. At the start of the second round Grove uses his reach and kicks, to back off Tanner. Tanner is able to take Grove down but Grove turns to a kimura and stands up off the fence. Grove lands a big elbow and knee and he is badly hurt. Grove ends off the round with a head kick and short crisp jabs to Tanner who is unable to close the distance and Grove’s reach. At the start of the third round Grove lands good inside elbows. The round is mostly a clinch game across the fence. Sensing desperation Tanner starts swinging for the fences and lands a couple of shots but Grove jabs his way out. Tanner loses a three round split decision and Kendall Grove looks like he is back in UFC middleweight contention.
