UFC 88 weight inNever doubt the online betting UFC handicapping experts at fighting-mma.com as our matchup reports for all the UFC fighters were bang on as we got an almost 100% accuracy on all the fights going 8 for 9. UFC betting wise the biggest score of the night was a +240 underdog pick victory by Kurt Pellegrino over the heavily favored Thiago Tavares. If you bet on this fight you would have won a lot of money. If you don’t believe me, re-read our UFC predictions.

Read the UFC 88 play by play recap for all the under card and main event card fights.

UFC 88 Breakthrough kicked off in Atlanta Georgia at the Phillips Arena for the first time with a classic Brazilian versus Japanese fight between two very accomplished fighters. Ryo Chonan was the last man to beat Anderson Silva at PRIDE - Shockwave 2004 with one of the most impressive submission finished in MMA history with a Flying Scissor Heel Hook. He has already beaten Roan Carneiro once before in his career and has gone 4 and 4 in his last 8 fights with loses to Karo Parisyan, Paulo Filho, Dan Henderson and Phil Baroni. The fight was back and forth with both fighters trading shots but Chonan seemed to push the pace most of the fight. The judges score the contest 29-28 (Carneiro) and 29-28 (twice) for the winner by split-decision, Ryo Chonan.

Next up was the hard hitting Jason Lambert fighting Jason MacDonald who just fought over a month ago at UFC 87 Seek and Destroy versus Demian Maia with a loss. Despite the loss, MacDonald showed great heart and put on a really great fight against Maia so he gets another shot against to fight again. At the start of the second round MacDonald takes Lambert down again and passes to mount and take his opponent’s back. MacDonald triangles the body and secures a rear-naked choke, which prompts Lambert to submit at 1:20 of the second round.

After getting worked by Matt Hamill at UFC - Fight Night 13 Tim Boetsch was looking to redeem himself against UFC newcomer Michael Patt. The fight was a mismatch from the get go, as Boetsch drops Patt with a right hand at 2:03 of the first round.

Kurt Pellegrino needed to beat heavily favorite Brazilian Thiago Tavares who was a -300 online sports betting favorite at Bookmaker.com. The first round had Batman pushing the pace of the fight and rocked Tavares throughout the first round. After the second round the scores were even up. As we stated in our UFC handicapping report Batman would push the pace of the fight and in the third round he did everything we predicted, as he was more aggressive and they played a part in the judges decision as the judges scored it 29-27 (twice) and 29-28 all for the winner, Kurt Pellegrino for a good betting payout at +240 (if you listened to our prediction).

Dong Hyun Kim came into the ring as a 4th degree judo black belt and he came in against TUF reality show fighter Matt Brown. Kim was all over Brown but Brown showed good defense throughout the fight. By the second round Brown took over with aggressiveness and by the third round fended off Kim but Kim scored more takedowns and cut Brown. In the end Kim won a split decision victory but Brown proved that he does belong in the UFC.

Denmark’s greatest fighter and online fan favorite Martin Kampmann took on King of Pancreas Nathan Marquardt. Surprisingly Marquardt comes out striking and lands huge high leg right leg kick to the head that rocked Kampmann. He proceeds to land upper cuts, body shots and relentless shots before the Mario Yamasaki stopped the fight 1:22 minute into the first round.

Brazilian Top Team fighter Rousimar Palhares takes on Dan Henderson as a big sports betting favorite but Henderson loses to Anderson Silva, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira are Palhares’ teammates. The fight was tense from the get go as Henderson wanted to keep the fight standing but Palhares wanted to go to the ground. There were a couple of times Palhares has legs locks on Henderson but he got out. In the end Henderson won the stand up war and won a unanimous decision.

The co-main event had two Cincinnati fighters facing off between Rich Franklin versus deaf fighter and TUF show alum Matt Hamill. Hamill inexperience was apparent as Franklin picked apart with lower leg kicks throughout the entire fight until Franklin rocked him with a kick to the body that must have broken his ribs.

Rashad Evans wanted to prove the world he is a legitimate fighter against Chuck Liddell. Evans came out cautious but in the second round he landed a right cross that landed on Liddell that knocked him out even before he hit the ground.  Evans shocks the world with a second round KO victory and better yet a +225 betting underdog.

The next UFC event will take place on October 18, 2008 at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham, England. UFC 89 Bisping vs. Leben will headline the home town Brit Michael Bisping versus hard hitting Chris Leben.
