UFC 87 Seek and Destroy

UFC Fight Results and Recap
UFC Betting Review:

GSP BeltUFC 87 Seek and Destroy lived up to the hype in so many ways. Georges St. Pierre pummeled #1 welterweight contender Jon Fitch for 5 rounds. As we predicted in our MMA prediction handicap report we stated that GSP would beat down Fitch for five rounds for a unanimous decision. If you placed UFC prop bets for our prediction that the fight would go to the distance (+401) and that GSP would win a 5 round decision at 5 Dimes (+601) a $200 dollar bet at that online sportsbook would have netted you 1002 dollars.

The first round GSP nearly put Fitch away as he rocked him so bad it looked like it would be a quick victory. To Fitch’s credit he with stood the storm and made it to the second round. St. Pierre totally controlled the fight with dominate striking and wrestling skills as he was able to do whatever he wanted to Fitch for the entire fight. So many times in the fight St Pierre had Fitch stunned with jabs and right crosses; it was amazing to many watching the fight that Fitch could even stand up.

In the third round GSP once again began to control the fight as St Pierre dropped Fitch with a right hook counter that sent Fitch’s mouthpiece flying into the stands. The third round was once again dominated by GSP as two judges scored it a 10-8 round for GSP. By the start of the fourth round Fitch is bleeding heavily but still surviving the fight. GSP went on to dominate a game fighter as the official judges saw the contest 50-43 and 50-44 (twice) for Georges St. Pierre.

From the start of this MMA fight GSP did whatever he wanted. He took Fitch down with wrestling. He became the first person ever in the UFC to pass Fitch’s guard. He used inside and outside leg kicks at will as well as high leg kicks to the head. He striking was so precise that he even tried a spinning back fist and a spinning back kick with effectiveness. GSP put on a MMA clinic with total domination.

So what’s next for GSP? Well BJ Penn came into the ring to challenge GSP which might set up the biggest UFC super fight ever.

Former WWE star Brock Lesnar got his first victory in the UFC with a dominate ground and pound victory over Heath Herring. Lesnar proved his detractors that he belongs in the UFC with his win over a very experienced veteran. Lesnar got the crowd roaring with a vicious straight right hand at the start of the fight that sent Herring back and almost out cold. That immediately cut and closed Herrings eye. From that point on Lesnar either mounted or had Herring in side control or top turtle position for the entire fight. All three official judges see the bout 30-26 for Brock Lesnar. Though Lesnar got the victory his lay and pray style was not all that exciting and he does still have a lot of holes in his overall MMA game. However, with this victory it not sends a message to the UFC heavyweight division that he is a force to be reckoned with. Tonight anyways Lesnar lived up to the hype.

Kenny Florian made a definite statement that his is the new number one contender to challenge BJ Penn with a dominate victory over Roger Huerta. Florian used precision striking to keep Huerta back all night despite Huerta pressing forward all night. Huerta could do nothing all night as he was stifled by Florian’s precise attack. All three official judges saw the bout 30-27 for Kenny Florian which now means he is the #1 contender for the UFC lightweight title. Florian has many detractors in the past but with this performance he has lived up to the hype that he is a legitimate fighter in the UFC.

The surprise of the night was a 12 second KO victory by Rob Emerson over Manny Gamburyan. Gamburyan comes out swinging wild and gets hit with an Emerson counter right. Manny collapses and is finished with a follow-up left hook. Referee Yves Lavigne steps in at just 0:12 of the opening period. If you bet on Emerson at any online sports betting site you would have gotten a nice pay out at +215.

The next UFC event will take place on September 6, 2008, at at the Phillips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia for the first time. UFC 88 Breakthrough will headline the Iceman Chuck Liddell who will fight TUF heavyweight winner Rashad Evans.
