UFC 86: Jackson vs. Griffin

If you read our UFC match up report we were accurate in the fight breakdown for the Cole Miller versus Jorge Gurgel. We have said it time and time again that Jorge Gurgel is one of the most over rated fighters in the UFC. He is supposed to be a great grappler and a fantastic black belt but when he fights in the UFC he gets worked. The UFC keeps on telling the audience that he is an exceptional grappler but we have yet to see it. Where are his grappling skills? Let’s call a spade a spade, he is only in the UFC because he is Rich Franklin’s buddy.

UFC betting wise, he has been a lock to bet against. For such a great grappler he got tapped out by Cole Miller with a Triangle Choke in the third round. The UFC needs to reevaluate his standing in the UFC as he constantly gets beat and does not fight well. Gurgel might be better off in the WEC with smaller less talented fighters.

Corey Hill showed that he needs to fight somewhere else before he is ready for the limelight as he was beat by Justin Buchholz with a second round Rear-Naked Choke. Hill is not ready for the UFC as this time but only got a shot because of his charisma in the TUF reality show. Also in the UFC under card, UFC heavyweight Gabriel Gonzaga showed that he is still a force in the division with a impressive Kimura over Justin McCully.

As the pay per view started, Tyson Griffin proved to the world that he is a force on the UFC as he overpowered American Top Team grappler Marcus Aurelio. Griffin used great ground and pound and wisely avoided every submission attempt that Aurelio threw at him. He used effective wresting as Griffin fought a perfect fight with a unanimous 30 to 27 decision.

Josh Koscheck came into the fight a big favorite by most online sportsbooks against Chris Lights Out Lytle. The first round was controlled by Koscheck as he was in Lytle’s guard for most of the first round. The second round had Koscheck coming out strong with takedowns and was in Lytle’s half guard for most of the fight where he was able to land some vicious elbows and cut him badly. Koscheck used his great base, improved striking and wrestling to dominate Lytle in the second round. The third round was once again dominated by Koscheck as he was able to get into Lytle’s half guard again and apply elbows again. Lyle showed great heart as blood poured all over the octagon but Koscheck was too dominate in this fight. Koscheck now makes a claim for a UFC welterweight title shot with a dominate victory over a game and bloody Chris Lytle.

At 5 foot 10 Gleison Tibau is one of the biggest lightweight fighters in the UFC. This UFC fighter came into the fight with Joe Stevenson as an underdog by most online sportsbooks. Tibau catches Stevenson with an omaplata but Stevenson turns out and the round ends with an attempted omaplata. Tibau wins the first round with the submission attempts over Stevenson. The second round starts with the fighters clinching and Tibau finally takes him down and passes his guard to gain side control. He gains mount in a failed inverted triangle and Stevenson gets out. Tibau shoots and Stevenson lands one of his patented Guillotine Choke.

The co-main event had the Big Dog Ricardo Almeida taking on the hard hitting Patrick Cote. The classic versus striker fight had Almeida coming in as one of the best BJJ fighters in the world but took a long lay off from MMA fighting. Cote comes out and pulls guard but Cote gets out and backs out to get the fight back standing. Almeida is able to take Cote down into Cote’s half guard and lands some effective punches. He first round ends with Almeida landed great ground and pound punches.

At the start of the second round Almeida pulls guard but Cote gets the fight back standing. The round was mostly Cote stalking Almeida and Almeida running and avoiding the punches. Cote clips Almeida as the second round bell sounded. Cote might have won the second round for being more aggressive. The third round had Cote pushing the fight trying to land strikes as Almeida retreats but Almeida lands a takedown. Due to being more aggressive, Cote won a hard fought split decision victory to maybe getting a title shot against Anderson Silva for the UFC middleweight title against the pound for pound best fighter in the world.

TUF season one winner and fan favorite Forrest Griffin now takes on Quinton Rampage Jackson for the UFC lightweight championship. The most powerful fighter in the 205 pound division comes out and Forrest sticks and moves out of Rampages range. A left hook wobbles Griffin but Griffin is able to back off Rampage with effective leg kicks. Rampage lands another upper cut that sends Griffin to the ground. In closed guard Jackson lands some punches. The round ends with Rampage winning the round but the tone is set as Jackson is aware of Griffins legs kicks.

The second round Griffin lands a lower leg kick that buckles Jackson. Forrest takes Rampage down in Jackson’s half guard and takes side control. He works for an Americana in side mount and Griffin lands short elbows to take mount. The round ends with him in mount and perhaps a 10 - 8 round.

The third round has both fighters standing and trading shots with Rampage landing better shots but Forerst is more aggressive. The fourth round opens with Jackson landing a hook and than a upper cut and than he takes Griffin down in full guard. Griffin applies a triangle choke and Jackson picks him up and slams him. Griffin scrambles up and Jackson clips him. The final round had both fighters swinging and trading shots and Forrest landing some legs kicks. The round ends in a flurry and the round is too close to call but Forrest is more aggressive and lands the more effective shots throughout the fight. Forrest Griffin wins the UFC light heavyweight by Unanimous decision. Scores were 48-46 twice and 49-46 for Griffin who engaged in the frontrunner for 2008 Fight of The Year with Jackson.

The next UFC event will take place on August 9, 2008, at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. UFC 87 Seek and Destroy will headline Georges St. Pierre versus Jon Fitch and will have fellow Minnesotan Brock Lesner fighting in his home town.  Check out the online betting odds for this UFC event.
