UFC 82: Pride of a Champion

UFC Fight Results and Recap
UFC Betting Review:

Anderson Silva weigh inIn the UFC 82 under card one of the biggest surprises was the fact that Chris Wilson took UFC welterweight top five fighter Jon Fitch to the distance. The first round was all Wilson as he landed some kicks to the body and got a single-leg, He even attempt an omaplata. Wilson definitely won the first round. Fitch averted the upset by turning the fight up in the second and third rounds to win unanimous decision.

Also in the undercard Luigi Fioravanti beat Luke Cummo. Cummo was a favorite in the fight as Fioravanti was a +120 underdog. If you read our UFC 82 preview we called this UFC dog pick.

At UFC 82 Pride of a Champion former UFC Middleweight Champion Evan Tanner returns to the ring. It is well publicized of Tanner’s alcoholism and we were waiting to see the return of the former champion. When Tanner came into the ring he looked great but is was apparent after the first round that he was not in octagon shape to compete; especially with an upper echelon fighter like Okami. By the second round Okami started to take over and he finally landed a knee to the head that crippled Tanner to the ground as Mark Matheny stepped in to call the fight at 3:00 of the second stage. As we stated in out UFC betting prediction, Tanner is not ready to fight and needs to focus on other things other than fighting.

Chris Leben returned to fight Alessio Sakara and as we predicted in our UFC betting match up, it was over quite fast as Leben out boxed the boxer. Leben landed a left hook counter shot that dropped Sakara. As Leben pounced Herb Dean decided to stop the fight at the 3:16 mark.

The co main event had Heath Herring versus Cheick Kongo. Herring connected to Kongo right off the bat and Kongo held on for dear life but Kongo persevered. Both fighters were able to take each other down and reverse each other. Herring had a real hard time controlling Kongo on the ground which is a testament to his focus on the ground game.

In the second round, Herring finally reversed Kongo and had him in a real tight side control where he landed numerous knees to the rib cage. Herring had a chance to do a north south choke or arm but rather continued to knee Kong’s rib cage. Once he was in Herring’s side control Kongo has no idea what to do. Herring wins a split decision as we said in our UFC betting preview and UFC match up.

The main event had Dan Henderson trying to reunite the middleweight belts. The first round was all Henderson as he was able to land some shots, but more importantly, he was able to take Anderson Silva down and control him in Silva’s half guard. In Silva’s half guard Henderson was able to land a number of shots. At the start of the second round Silva looked pissed as he pressed the pace and caught Henderson with a knee and sent him to the ground. Silva took the top in half-guard and within a minute left in the round, Henderson gave up his back, where Silva punched away with a body-triangle. Silva sunk in a rear-naked choke which forced Henderson to tap. Silva retains the middleweight crown at 4:52 of the second round.
