UFC 81: Breaking Point
UFC Fight Results and Recap
UFC Betting Review:
It might sound like a broken record, but once again our mixed martial arts predictions for UFC 81 Breaking Point were bang on.
The main event had Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira fighting Tim “The Maniac” Sylvia for the UFC interim heavyweight title. Nogueira once again showed his resilience as a fighter as he was rocked early by a left hook and then a right hook that sent him to the ground. Sylvia could not finish off Nogueira as he was able to survive the round. Nogueira's constant attempts to shoot in were forted by the good defensive sprawl of Sylvia’s. At the end of the round Minotauro finally took Sylvia down but the round was over before he could do any damage. After the first round it looked like Sylvia was going to roll through Minotauro.
In the second round, Sylvia once again dominated the standup but Minotauro was gaining more confidence in the stand up and not getting hit as hard and as often. He was again shooting in for takedowns but could not get Sylvia on his back. The Maniac also won round two by peppering Nogueira with numerous shots.
At the start of round three both fighters traded shots and instead of shooting straight in for a single leg, Nogueira shot in Sylvia’s left leg in a diagonal angle instead of straight on. This confused Sylvia’s sprawl attempt. Once Nogueira got Sylvia on his back it was a different fight. Nogueira was able to land shots in the top position and Sylvia was able to roll and scramble out but Nogueira rolled with him and caught Sylvia with a vicious Guillotine Choke. If you read our MMA match up report we called this fight word for word.
The co-main event had WWE star Brock Lesner making his UFC debut against former UFC champion Frank Mir. If you read our pre-fight report we said that Lesner would be exposed for his lack of experience. The cardinal rule is skill before strength and this fight lived up to the old adage. Lesner rushed in on Mir and was able to easily take him down for a ground pound. However his strikes were short and not as powerful as they should've been.
Despite the initial onslaught, Mir was able to weather the storm and was almost able to land two arm bars. Lesner hit Mir on the back of the head and the ref had to stand the fighters up as Brock was deducted a point for illegal blows to the back of the head. Once the fight resumed Lesner was able to shoot in and take Mir down again. Mir had Lesner in the spider guard and spun around for a knee bar. Lesner made the rookie mistake and tried to run to escape the leg hold instead of turning into Mir. Once Lesner extended his leg Mir was able to triangle his leg and lock in the knee bar. Lesner tapped out in seconds.
Also as we predicted Nathan Marquardt easily disposed of Jeremy Horn with a submission by Guillotine Choke. Marquardt showed great composure on the ground with a tight guard as opposed to Horn’s loose guard. Even though Ricardo Almeida has not fought in close to four years he showed little rust in the UFC octagon as he made Rob Yundt look stupid in the ring.
Now that Nogueira is the interim UFC heavyweight champ who does he fight now? Randy Couture?
Next up is UFC 82 Pride of a Champion that will be held on March 1, 2008 at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio.
