Pride 34 was the last true event before Dan White and the UFC begin taking over the organization. Wanderlei Silva was suppose to fight in the main event but did not fight because of a medical suspension received from the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Gilbert Yvel was originally slated to fight Bazigit Atajev, but Atajev withdrew due to an internal disease. This Pride event was another coming out party for Team Quest's Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou who defeated one of the top pound for pound light heavy weights in the world Ricardo Arona. Sokoudjou defeated Arona at 1:59 in the first round by technical knockout
