UFC President Dana White announced yesterday that Matt Serra is injured and unable to fight. Taking his place will be Matt Hughes, arch rival, George St.Pierre in an interm title match.
Matt Serra suffered a herniated disc in his back last Monday and he notified Dana White that he couldn’t fight. White wanted a big fight to finish out the 07’ UFC season, and with Serra out White joked that he was on suicide watch. White started looking around for another fighter to replace Serra, not knowing if Hughes would even fight another fighter. This is for a chance at a title shot, you know! Hughes agreed to fight another fighter. When word got out Dana White received a phone call from a fighter who wanted a piece of Hughes. It was none other than George St.Pierre.
By the end of the week both Matt Hughes and George St.Pierre had agreed to fight, for what should be an even better fight than the previously scheduled fight.
Both fighters have faced each other twice in the Octagon. Matt Hughes handed St.Pierre his first loss in UFC 50, in which Hughes submitted St.Pierre. Then there was a rematch in UFC 65 in which St.Pierre demolished Hughes and won by TKO.
Both fighters have beaten the same caliber of fighters. Some of the fighters they’ve beaten are B.J. Penn, Sean Sherk, and Frank Trigg. St.Pierre’s most upsetting loss was to Matt Serra in UFC 69, when Serra absolutely dominated him and won by TKO. Vice versa for Matt Hughes who was beaten by St.Pierre in UFC 65 by TKO.
It’s going to be the perfect way to close out the 07’ season of UFC.
