I
have been a Joe Doerksen (39 - 9) fan forever now. He has long
been an ambassador to mixed martial arts in Canada. I have been
to a number of his seminars and seen him fight many times. On
a grappling level, he is probably one of the best in Canada
but he is facing one of the most skilled MMA fighters in the
game today in Paulo Filho (14-0) at World Extreme Cagefighting
WEC 29. He can easily match and better Doerksen's ground game;
he is a Brazilian Top Team member for god sakes and his stand
up is much more devastating and clean with the ability to do
heavy damage.
Joe Doerksen is no slouch and has fought some great fighters
in the past like Matt Lindland, Patrick Cote, Ed Herman, Joe
Riggs, Chris Leben, Denis Kang, David Loiseau, Egan Inoue, Lee
Murray, Matt Hughes, and Eugene Jackson. Though he has fought
some great fighters Doerksen has not been about to beat a lot
of the top fighters and has always been a star waiting to breakout.
In most cases where Doerksen faces a skilled striker he will
usually take them to the ground and submit them; unfortunately
Filho is better on the ground. Doerksen is past his prime and
is fighting and a rising MMA superstar in Filho.
Paulo Filho is still undefeated in mixed martial arts and has
beat some very good fighters like Kazuo Misaki, Ryo Chonan,
Murilo Rua, Amar Suloev, Daijiro Matsui, Yuki Kondo, Ikuhisa
Minowa and Akira Shoji (twice) who many believe is one of the
best pound
for pound MMA fighters in the world.
Bottom Line: Paulo Filho is one of the toughest fighters in
the world and is on the rise while I'm sadly to say Joe Doerksen
is on the downward spiral of his career. He does not have the
ferocity that Filho does and he has a much more polished jujitsu
game than Doerksen does.
Honestly this
fight should be a walk in the park for Filho
