Wow,
Jorge Gurgel (11-2) is a -175 favorite versus Alvin Robinson,
but in reality he’s only on this UFC because he’s
Rich Franklin’s friend, a training partner and he’s
from Cincinnati. In Brazil, Jorge Gurgel (11-2) must’ve
learnt his jujitsu at the YMCA because his technique is just not
tight. Jorge Gurgel is supposed to be a great Brazilian Jujitsu
expert but from what I’ve seen. his technique is very bad
and his style does not suit the MMA game. Maybe in gi tournaments
he might be effective, but in the UFC octagon his fighting does
not match his credentials. Gurgel is Rich Franklin’s training
partner and his BJJ instructor. Well, we know how good Franklin’s
BJJ is (non-existent) and Gurgel couldn’t even make it out
of the reality show which shows that his skill as an MMA fighter
just isn’t that great. If his BJJ skills are so good, then
why did he not make it out of the Ultimate Fighter Reality Series
(TUF)? Where did he learn his jujitsu from? His style is not from
Gracie Barra or Carlson Gracie, that’s for sure.
Jorge
Gurgel lost to Masakazu Imanari with a heel hook. Are you kidding
me, he is supposed to be a great BJJ fighter and he lost to a
heel hook. He also lost to Mark Hominick at the UFC Ultimate Fight
Night 5 where he tried to stand up and trade with Hominick. Hominick
can’t fight on the ground whatsoever and he was defending
the takedown like he was Chuck Liddell. Gurgel couldn’t
even punch his way out of a wet paper bag. He eventually lost
that, because he was manhandled in the standup. Now
Alvin Robinson (8-2) trained under Royce Gracie and his BJJ is
very sound. We know he has the ability on the ground because all
of his 8 wins have come by submission. If he trained under Royce,
we know that his base is strong and solid. His only 2 losses have
been by strikes (Kenny
Florian UFC 73: Stacked) and Fabio Holanda), but Gurgel
has no punching power whatsoever.
Bottom
Line: Gurgel is not a great fighter and his skills on the ground
are way overhyped. Look for Robinson to press the attack in the
stand up and confuse Gurgel all night. Though Robinson has not
fought any top level opponent yet, Gurgel is certainly not a top
level guy right now anyways. Jorge’s BJJ skills are way
overrated and Alvin Robinson is a pressing fighter that has great
BJJ skills under Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Royce Gracie.
Take Robinson in a +155 upset with a second round submission
