Clay Guida vs. Marcus Aurelio

Not to be mean but who the hell is Clay “The Carpenter” Guida (21-8)? Okay, I know who he is but why do most sportsbooks have him at -115 odds when he is fighting Marcus Maximus Aurelio (14-4). Is it because the odd makers are looking at the records of both fighters and since Guida has won and fought more fights he is considered on the same level as Aurelio?
First off, Aurelio has fought in the Pride organization and has fought some of the toughest people in the world. He is the first person in the world to beat pound for pound top ten fighter Takanori Gomi at Pride Bushido 10 with an arm triangle choke. His last lost was a rematch with Gomi where he lost at a close split decision. He has also lost to Mitsuhiro Ishida and Dokonjonosuke Mishima who are top level fighters.

Clay “The Carpenter” Guida is supposed to be a submission specialist but he will be facing Aurelio and has nowhere near as much skill on the ground. Aurelio has trained with some of the best BJJ instructors in the world like Marcus Soares and is now fighting out of American Top Team (ATT). Guida’s last two fights he lost to Tyson Griffin and Din Thomas. If you look at Guida’s fight record there is not a name that jumps out at me saying he has fought any top level opponents and the ones he fought he lost (Gilbert Melendez, Tyson Griffin and Din Thomas).

Din Thomas trains at the same camp as Aurelio at American Top Team in Coconut Creek Florida. If Guida can’t beat Aurelio’s teammate there is no way he will be able to beat Aurelio who is a much better fighter than Din Thomas. Marcus can also get valuable inside fighter information on how Guida fights as opposed to Guida knowing Aurelio’s fight game.

Bottom Line: Aurelio comes from a great MMA club and has the pedigree and skill set with his background in Brazilian Jujitsu. Guida’s only chance is to knock out Aurelio but if Gomi could not do it what chance does Guida have? Aurelio is a much better fighter than Guida it is almost embarrassing and to showcase such a talented athlete as Aurelio in the underdog is just bad matchmaking skills by Dana White and Zuffa.
