Everyone and their is pulling for De La Hoya but Floyd Mayweather Jr. is the real deal and the best pound for pound fighter in the world. Wait until Sunday. First of all Mayweather is going up in weight to fight De La Hoya which mean he will be slower and not as powerful. Mayweather has never been a devastating power puncher. He is fast and his fury’s or combinations are what makes him a great fighter. He is the smaller version of Roy Jones Jr. When De La Hoya moved up in weight to fight Bernard Hopkins he was overpowered and this is what will happen to Mayweather on Saturday.
Yes Mayweather is a great boxer but he has not been in a mega fight before and Mayweather has never fought a guy as big and talented as De La Hoya. This is run of the mill for De La Hoya who has fought the Executioner Hopkins, Ricardo Mayorga, Shane Mosley, Fernando Vargas, Arturo Gatti, Felix Trinidad, Oba Carr, Ike Quartey, Julio César Chávez (twice) and Pernell Whitaker. Mayweather has not been in the spotlight like De La Hoya has and has only fought 3 great fighters: Diego Corrales, Arturo Gatti and Zab Judah.
De La Hoya has gone old school to train for this fight. He and Freddy Roach moved his camp to Porto Rica and trained without all the fan fare. They have gone back to basics(reminiscent of Rocky 4). Mayweather on the other hand trains with his posse around in Las Vegas, has a media circle around him to inflate his already big ego. This contrast in training is what will give De La Hoya the victory.
Bottom Line: De La Hoya is no joke. He was Fighter of the Year in 1995 and Ring Magazine's best "Pound for Pound" fighter in the world in 1997. If you look at the Mayweather camp it looks like a scene from Jerry Springer. This family is so dysfunctional it makes white trash look sophisticated. Mayweather is not taking this fight as serious as he should. He wants to bask in the spotlight telling everyone that he is the best. Well you have to train like you’re the best to be the best.
