UFC Betting Pick: Yoshihiro Akiyama (+140)
Bet this MMA UFC fight at Bookmaker
Middleweight bout: Wanderlei "The Axe Murderer" Silva (-170) vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama (+140)
*****Note On June 22, 2010, Wanderlei Silva had to withdraw from his co-main event fight against Yoshihiro Akiyama due to three broken ribs and an injured right knee. Akiyama is now scheduled to face Chris Leben
It is too late to do match up but Bet on Akiyama to destroy Leben
At this point in his career Wanderlei “The Axe Murderer” Silva (33-10-1-1) is at the tail end of his career. He has done it all in mixed martial arts but at age 33 he has had way too many wars and is not the same fighter he was when he was in PRIDE.
Though Silva has never lost to a Japanese fighter in his MMA career, that streak will continue as he faces Yoshihiro Akiyama (13-1). After this fight he will still be unbeaten against Japanese fighters since Akiyama is only ½ Japanese. Nevertheless, Silva is he is no where near the feared fighter he once was.
Since leaving Pride Silva has gained too much weight and put on a lot of muscle. He is now less mobile and less quick. He does not have the hand speed he once had and he has been in way too many wars and hard fought battle. He looks more like a body builder than a MMA fighter these days.
Like of the old guard Silva is done with fighting. He has been in too many wars and too many fights and that has taken a toll on his body. Just like Cro Cop, Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira and Chuck Liddell they are no where near the fighters they once were.
What made Silva the once most feared fighter in the world was his aggressiveness, speed and quick hands and kicks. Not that he has put on the weight and muscle he is lost all his skills that made him a mixed martial arts legend. Though, only at 33 Silva has been in too many wars and it might be time for him to give up pro fighting.
Silva couldn’t even beat Rich Franklin at UFC 99: The Comeback as he looked way too slow against an average fighter. His next fight versus Michael Bisping at UFC 110: Nogueira vs. Velasquez he won the fight but it went to a decision against a guy he should have handily beat. In his last 7 mixed martial arts fight he has 5 loses.
Yoshihiro Akiyama won a hard fought decision versus Alan Belcher at UFC 100. Though I thought Belcher won the fight Belcher is a top ranked up and coming fighter and one of the top middleweights in the division now. Akiyama is a top rated fighter who has beaten some very good guys in his career. He has beaten Melvin Manhoef, Kazushi Sakuraba, Denis Kang and Kazuo Misaki which are all fighters that have different types of styles and he has beaten strikers and grapplers.
Silva still has the power to knock out Akiyama but he has to catch him. Since putting all the muscle Silva has gained in power but drastically reduced in speed. Akiyama has way too much speed for Silva to catch up on. Silva will throw punches but they will be too slow to hit the much quicker Akiyama. A Wanderlei Silva of 4 years ago would have destroyed Akiyama but that was 4 years ago and Silva is not the same fighter.
Akiyama has power in his punches and is fast enough to move in punch and move out before he will get hit. He will pepper Silva with shots, who will be too slow to avoid the quicker shots of Akiyama.
A Silva of 4 years ago would have brutalized Akiyama with lower leg shots and kicks to the midsection. He would have used the Muay Thai clinch and used his knees to put out Akiyama. Since fighting in the UFC when was the last time you saw Silva kick? He now relies on his punches and not longer kicks; something that made him famous.
Grappling wise both fighters are good on the ground. But with the added weight gain the once mobile Silva will not be as quick with his hips on the ground. Akiyama has a very good ground game and with his judo experience he can get some take down points. On the ground Akiyama is much faster and in top position and keep Silva on the ground.
Bottom Line: The UFC sports betting odds have Silva as a -170 online betting favorite. Four years ago this fight would have opened up at -500 but not today. Silva is a betting favorite because he is a popular fighter and a well known name. Personally, I would love for Silva to win this fight but this is 2010 and not 2005. He is slower, bulkier and been in too many wars to be an effective fighter today.
UFC President Dana White stated that Akiyama had requested to fight Silva for a while and has refused to fight other opponents, after which both fighters verbally agreed to fight. Akiyama has been waiting this fight and requesting this fight for some time and he will be well prepared for his fight with Silva.
For this you have to bet on the fresher, faster and healthier fighter. Akiyama will use his speed to get the takedowns and quick in and out jabs to hurt Silva who will not be quick enough to block or defend the quick shots.
Look for Akiyama to Win a Unanimous Decision
