Welterweight Bout: Carlos "Natural Born Killer" Condit vs. Rory "The Waterboy" MacDonald

It is likely you may not have heard of Rory “The Waterboy” MacDonald (10-0) as of yet, but he just may be the next best thing in mixed martial arts. His next bout will be a tough one against Carlos “Natural Born Killer” Condit (24-5).

Condit is a very good warrior who can fight from anywhere. He has very good submissions and has taken some very decent fighters such as Martin Kampmann, Carlo Prater, Brock Larson, Frank Trigg and Renato Verissimo. He currently trains out of Jackson’s Submission Fighting run by Greg Jackson, a former WEC welterweight champion before he left to join the UFC.

MacDonald has all the makings to be a great fighter in the UFC. Winning his professional debut in 2005 at the age of sixteen against Terry Thiara at the Extreme Fighting Challenge 4, MacDonald has mowed through the KOTC and has begun to gain recognition.

He currently holds the MMA lightweight titles with King of the Cage and King of the Cage Canada and now at the ripe old age of 20, is on the brink of MMA stardom. Catching the eye of fellow Canadian, Georges St-Pierre, MacDonald was invited by the UFC welterweight champion to train with him at the Tri Star gym in Montreal. Like many, it is likely St-Pierre also believes that MacDonald may be one of the best young blue chip prospects in the world for mixed martial arts and a fellow Canadian as well.

MacDonald has also been training striking with Adam Ryan at Dynamic MMA in Vancouver Canada who has great striking and mixed martial arts experience. Adam Ryan trainer an co-owner of Dynamic MMA is in Kelowna helping Rory McDonald get ready for his UFC 115 bout June12. Ryan is a well known MMA trainer and his training partner, Denis Kang, travelled the world earning many victories; he has competed with and defeated, by KO and submission, top UFC and Pride veterans. Adam earned his Brazillian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt from Marcus Soares (Carlson Gracie Team) and now enjoys competing at the World Championships with the best in the world. Adam is also actively training for more MMA and Muay Thai fights. He has a trained some of the good MMA fighters like Fighters coached include Dustin Loxterkamp, Kyle Cox, Ben Greer, Todd Gouwenberg, Liz Posener/Bader, Tyler Jackson, Kultar Gill, Tim Thurston, Yoon Heo, Wes Jaya, Hugh Rogers, Brendan Kornberger, Bastien Huveneers, Dan Ring and Garrett Davis and has a growing repuation in training up and coming fighters. MacDonald has elevated his game buy training with someof the best camps in Canada and associating himslef with a diverse array or training which gives him the advantage in this ifght.

Yes Condit had an overall better camp, training with Greg Jackson but the gap is no where near as wide as most people suggest. Carlos Condit is a top 170 fighter and has been ranked as high as #10 in the welterweight rankings. He can fight from anywhere—he is a good grappler, a good wrestler and can knock guys out. He is very well rounded and out of his 24 wins, he has a 10 by knockout and 13 by submission. Prior to the UFC Condit was destroying opponents left, right and centre, however since his move, he has not been consistent and rather lack luster—he lost a lost a split decision to Martin Kampmann at UFC Fight Night: Condit vs. Kampmann and won a split decision over Jake Ellenberger at UFC Fight Night 19. Given his ability and past record, these are fights that Condit should have been able to win easily yet his performance was very average. It may be the pressure of fighting in the UFC octagon or some other stress factor but his fight game has definitely been off. It will be interesting to see how he performs against MacDonald, a fighter that he should be able to take.

Bottom Line: No one expects MacDonald to win this fight—he is a virtual unknown outside Canada and even in Canada, he is still toiling, for the most part, anonymously in the ranks. He trains in a small camp in Kelowna which is three hours outside Vancouver—the locale for UFC 115. Though he will have the hometown crowd on his side, MacDonald there will be no pressure on him to win—only to show up.

In terms of sports betting I am not suggesting you bet the bank on this one, however, if you are looking for a dark horse pick and are willing to bet on a big underdog, this is your fight. When the lines open up there will be a huge advantage on Carlos Condit and rightfully so. They will probably be at -350 to -400 in favor of Condit. As the odds are so great, a small play is your best bet. Personally, I will be laying my coin on the hometown kid as I have seen him fight many a time and he does look to be the next best thing in MMA.

Though Condit has a good number of submission wins most of his losses have also come by submission. Though he is very dynamic on the ground but he is also very loose—he tends to take a lot of chances and as he does not always have his guard up, he can be easily compromised. MacDonald is very good once he takes a fighter on his back and his grappling base is very tight—this is where he will win this fight.

I am willing to put my money on the line for this fight as that is how much I believe in this kid, even against a top ten fighter like Condit. Condit is a better striker, better grappler, comes from a better MMA training camp, has more fight experience and has taken more top level fighters than MacDonald, however, my money is still on The Waterboy.

Look for MacDonald to Surprise the World with a Second Round Rear Naked Choke
