Welterweight bout: Amir Sadollah (-145) vs. Dong Hyun Kim (+115)

In my humble opinion, one of the brightest rising stars in mixed martial arts is Amir Sadollah (4-1). This guy went into the Ultimate Fighter reality show without a professional mixed martial arts record and ended up winning the show by defeating some very experienced fighters along the way such as C.B. Dollaway—twice.

Sadollah has good submissions and very good striking and will be up against Dong Hyun Kim (12-0), a 4th Dan in judo, in his next bout. Despite being undefeated in 12, Kim has yet to beat anyone of any note—at UFC 88: Breakthrough, he went the distance with Matt Brown, who is basically a C level fighter with no real skills; at UFC 94: St-Pierre vs. Penn 2, Kim won a no contest fight over Karo Parisyan only because Parisyan tested positive for banned painkillers. Kim’s last fight was against TJ Grant at UFC 100 where he won a decision victory over another C level fighter.

Though Kim may be a 4th degree black belt in judo, this is the world of mixed martial arts and that equates to very little. Unlike Brazilian jiu-jitsu, judo does not translate well in MMA. For starters, a gi is generally worn in judo but in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, it is commonplace to train with or without one—and the list goes on. Unfortunately for the purists of this ancient sport, you can be the best judoka in the world and only be considered a half-way decent MMA fighter—which is what Kim is.

Sadollah is a purple belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and a black belt in Sambo, which means his grappling is much better than that of Kim. Typically a blue belt in BJJ can take most black belts of any martial arts form on the ground, so basically, do not let Kim’s 4th degree judo black belt impress you too much. If he does manage to take Sadollah with a throw he may get the points, but will be forced to face Sadollah on the mats and fend off his BJJ and Sambo.

Sambo training makes all the difference in Sadollah’s grappling. Developed early in the 1900s by the Soviet Red Army to improve the combat abilities of the military, Sambo is the merger of some of the most effective techniques of various martial arts. Close quarter, hand to hand combat is the basis of Sambo in which Sadollah has learned to master the technique of leg locks—a skill not many fighters possess. His ability to actively fight from anywhere on the ground with his various skill sets will undoubtedly overwhelm Kim.

Typically judoka’s have excellent throws—but only while facing opponents who are wearing a judogi—they cannot seem to be able to pull off a decent throw against someone without a gi. Even so, throws without decent ground skills are next to useless in mixed marital arts. Like any other martial art, judo also incorporates ground skills but the lethal aspect of this sport has long been taken out of practice. Grappling in judo no long incorporates leg lock nor shoulder locks but now consists mainly of straight arm holds and chokes with the gi. Unfortunately, this is not very useful in the world of MMA.

When it comes to striking, Sadollah is once again better at this aspect of the sport than Kim. In all fairness, Sahollah has worked hard to improve his hitting. He has trained at some very good mixed martial arts clubs such as Team Curran MMA and Xtreme Couture and has picked up Muay Thai from Golden Glory in Holland, one of the best Muay Thai camps in the world.

Bottom Line: Sadollah is turning out to be a good all-round mixed martial arts fighter—he can fight from anywhere, is not afraid to go to the ground, is not afraid to strike and he can fight in the clinch as well as from the distance. He will be too much for Kim to handle, who does not have the kicks nor power striking. Kim is no threat to Sadollah. Sadollah will hurt him with kicks and will not be afraid to be taken down. The fact is Sadollah can fight from anywhere and Kim cannot.

In terms of UFC betting, I like the odds for this fight as I do not see Kim with a chance to win this. Though he may be a great judoka, there has yet to be one as a high ranking MMA fighter and Kim is not it. He has not taken any big names fighters in the UFC as Karo Parisyan does not count as he was disqualified for a banned substance.

This fight is a steal at -145 for Sadollah as I would thought the lines would have been closer to -250 for Sadollah. I highly recommend betting heavily on this fight.
