UFC Betting Pick: BJ Penn (-875)
Bet this MMA UFC fight at Bookmaker
Lightweight Championship bout: B.J. "The Prodigy" Penn (-875) vs. Frankie "The Answer" Edgar (+575)
Frankie "The Answer" Edgar (12-1) gets his dream and a shot at a world title. Too bad it is against the most dominate 155 pound fighter in history in B.J. "The Prodigy" Penn (15-5-1). Edgar is a very good fighter but he is not a great fighter.
Edgar is a pressure fighter that’s wins his fights by being aggressive and by being the better aggressor. That's how he won his fight against Sean Sherk at UFC 98: Evans vs Machida, Hermes Franca at UFC: Silva vs. Irvin and Gray Maynard at UFC – Fight Night 13. Edgar is a work horse and will not gas out in this fight. Despite that fact he has beaten very good fighters he has only faced a top level fighter once and that was against Sherk. BJ Penn dismantled Sherk while Edgar was able to outwork him and win a decision.
Edgar is a good fighter and probably deserves the #1 contender slot however, he is not a great fighter and that’s what BJ Penn is. Just like the UFC middleweight and welterweight division the champions are so much better than the contenders. No one can touch Georges St. Pierre in the welterweight division, no one can touch Anderson Silva in the middleweight division and no one can touch BJ at 155 pounds.
Edgar might be a pressure fighter but he is not a finisher. In his last 9 mixed martial arts fights Edgar has had 7 of them go to decision. He has one TKO over Mark Bocek at UCF 73 – Stacked and one submission victory over Matt Veach at the UFC: The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale. There is no way that Edgar will be able to submit Penn. Even though he is a purple belt under Ricardo Almeida he is no BJ Penn.
At 5 foot 6 Edgar is a very small fighter. If the UFC had a bantamweight or featherweight division he would be fighting in that. For his size he is very strong and he has very surprising powerful strikes for a person his size.
However, at 155 BJ Penn is almost unbeatable. He has problems with bigger stronger fighters like Georges St Pierre, Lyoto Machida or Matt Hughes. Fighting against a small fighter like Edgar, Penn will overpower him with his size.
Edgar is the much better wrestler in this fight but the one thing that will stop him from taking Penn down is Penn’s balance. Only Georges St Pierre was able to takedown and control Penn on the ground but he was bigger and way stronger. Edgar might have the speed to get the single leg but he won’t have the power to finish the takedown. Penn is the most flexible fighter in the UFC and his balance is second to none. His legs bend in positions no one else can and that will be hard for Edgar who is a smaller fight to content with.
Striking is where Penn will win this fight. He has grown into a very technical striker. He has pin point accuracy and will be able to pick apart Edgar with his jabs. The only chance Edgar has in the striking department is the over hand right. His jabs and crosses will not get to Penn because he has shorter limbs. He also have to throw the over hand right because he is punching up. Penn will pepper Edgar with jabs until he takes him to the ground. This is where ultimately he will be submitted.
On the ground once Penn gets on top he there is little a fighter can do. If Penn takes Edgar’s back he has the base control, balance and technique that no fighter can get out of. Even if Edgar gains top position his ground and pound will be ineffective because of his shirt limbs. Edgar does not want to get on the ground because that is where Penn is most dangerous; however, Penn’s striking is also dominating.
Bottom Line: Just look at the sports betting lines. Are you willing to shell out 875 for Penn just to win 100 bucks? Honestly, this is one fight to stay away from. If there is a bet to be made if might be a UFC prop bet for this fight to go the distance. Remember Edgar is quick and he is a game tough fighter.
One note for UFC bettors. All three champions in the UFC 155, 170 and 185 division are always huge sports betting favorites. But if you look at their title defenses they do win their fights but they never finish their fights. Yes they are able to dominate them throughout the entire fight but they all win by decision.
Look at GSP, he went to decision in 3 out his last 4 fights and most recently with Dan Hardy at UFC 111: St.Pierre vs. Hardy. Look at Anderson Silva who went the distance with Thales Leites at UFC 97: Redemption and would have gone the distance with Patrick Cote at UFC 90: Silva vs. Côté if he did not blow his knee in the fight. All three champion know they can beat their opponent so why put the extra effort in. Sure if the opportunity is there Penn will take it but he will be happy to jab out his victory. If there was a bet to make on this fight it is a proposition bet for Penn to win by decision. One of the only sports books that takes UFC props bets is 5 Dimes and they have this fights betting lines to go the distance at +250.
If you still are thinking about betting on this fight look at credentials of both fighters.
Frank Edgar
Edgar wrestled at Toms River High School East, making it to the New Jersey state championship tournament on two occasions and also wrestling at Clarion University of Pennsylvania, where he qualified for the nationals all four years. Edgar is also an assistant coach for the Rutgers University wrestling team.
He is a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Ricardo Almeida
Edgar has a pretty good resume leading up to mixed martial arts. He has a good boxing coach in Mark Henry and world class Jiu-Jitsu instructor in Ricardo Almeida and a good teacher in wrestling under Steve Rivera. With what he has done he looks like a good fighter.
Now look at BJ Penn’s resume.

1999 Brown Belt Leve: 3rd Place
1998 Blue Belt Pena: 2nd Place

Black belt awarded by Andre Pederneiras
Penn became the first non-Brazilian to win the black-belt division of the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He became only the second fighter to win UFC titles in two different weight classes.
Now that’s the difference with both fighters.
Look for Penn to Win with Strikes and go the Distance for a Unanimous Decision Victory
