UFC Lightweight Fight: “Handsome” Matt Wiman (+115) vs Sam “Hands of Stone” Stout (-145)

Out of all the UFC 97 fights, this fight is the best underdog fight to wager on. There is no way Sam “Hands of Stone” Stout (13-5-1) should be a -145 at most online sportsbooks. If there is a definition of a one-dimensional fighter in mixed martial arts, it would be Sam Stout. Let’s face it: he is on the UFC card to appease the Canadian fans. Sam Stout really has no business in the UFC octagon and most of his UFC fights have shown that he cannot fight on the ground.

“Handsome” Matt Wiman (10-4) is a very good ground fighter and is so much better on the ground than Stout. Wiman has only been knocked out once and his last fight with Jim Miller showed that he can take a punch and even though he lost, Wiman was constantly going for submissions and was constantly getting out of them. Wiman is a much better well-rounded fighter while Stout is only good at one thing.

This fighter is a striker versus mixed martial arts fighter. In this day and age you need to be a complete fighter and Sam Stout is not there yet. Yes Stout has much better striking in both punches and kicks but Wiman can hold his own long enough to take him down. He has only lost once by knockout to Spencer Fisher at UFC 60: Hughes vs. Gracie and Wiman’s striking has been approved. He has enough striking skills to keep Stout at bay with his striking. Remember he fought and beat hard-hitting Thiago Tavares by knockout from a right hook in the second round at UFC 85: Bedlam.

Wiman will not outstrike Stout but he has enough skills to use his striking to set him up for what he wants to do. However whether he can take Stout down or not is a different story. Yes, Stout is a very good Muay Tai fighter, and he has very good strikes and kicks. Everyone talks about Stout’s knockout power but that was early on in his career. In his first 10 fights he had 6 knockouts.

Everyone was talking about how Stout was such a great striker…and he is in the TKO MMA organization. But the TKO is not the UFC and Stout has never knocked anyone out in the UFC. There is nothing wrong with TKO; it just does not have the best MMA fighters and the quality of its fighters is not the greatest.

Since Stout has stepped up to the big leagues in the UFC, he has not really performed very well. In Canada he is a knockout specialist but he was a big fish in the small pond. In the UFC, he is a very little fish with 2 wins and 4 losses in the UFC octagon. Not an impressive record in the UFC and against average fighters as well.

Since fighting in the UFC, Stout, who is supposed to be a finisher, has never knocked anyone out and has gone to the decision in 5 out of 6 fights ands got submitted in the other one. So now are you convinced Stout is a dangerous striker?

Grappling-wise, Wiman is a very good grappler and much better than Stout is. Stout does very little to work on his grappling game as he just tries to practice on takedown defense and sprawling. Because Stout has good striking, he has very good fundamental striking position.

This is good in a kickboxing match to always have your hands up high, but this is mixed martial arts and having your hands up leads you to be susceptible for takedowns. This is where Wiman will expose Stout in the fight. Once he has the takedown, Wiman will control the fight with a dominating top position game. Wiman has slick ground skills, is the bigger and stronger fighter, and he will use his strength to pin down Stout and control him.

Bottom Line: Stout still needs to learn how to be a complete fighter. Both fighters are warriors and like to put on a good show. Wiman will win this fight by just being a better all-round fighter. At +115 at most online sportsbook I love this underdog bet. I really don’t see why Stout is such a large betting favorite at -145 but as an online sports bettor I am betting large on the underdog.

An even better sports bet is to do a UFC prop bet for this fight to go all three rounds. First Stout has not shown he can KO guys and 5 out of his last 6 UFC fight have all went to the decision. Take the underdog bet on the money line and take the prop bet and if your online sportsbook allows it, take both bets with a UFC parlay bet.

Wiman Will Controlled the fight with Ttakedowns and Ground Control, and Win a Unanimous Decision
