UFC Welterweight Fight: Pete “Drago” Sell (-140) vs. Matt “The Immortal” Brown (+100)
To me Matt “The Immortal” Brown (8-7) has no business fighting in the UFC. He has an 8 and 7 fight record with loses to guys most people have never heard of. He is only fighting in the UFC because he was on the Ultimate Fighter reality show. If there is any proof of a TUF betting bump, this is it.
This fight is hand made for online sports bettors. It is a fight that online gamblers can make some money on. Especially since Brown has been on the reality show and the sportsbook odds makers have opened up with very soft lines, I would be jumping all over his bet. Matt Brown will be fighting very hard hitting Pete “Drago” Sell (8-4) who is heads and tails above a better fighter than Matt Brown is.
Sell has fought tough fighters through out his MMA career including Josh Burkman at UFC 90: Silva vs. Côté, Nathan Quarry at UFC Fight Night: Thomas vs Florian, Thales Leites at UFC 69 - Shootout, Scott Smith at The Ultimate Fighter 4 Finale, and Phil Baroni. Yes he has not won some of those fights but there were against top level competition.
Just look at who Matt Brown has fought in his career, He has loses to Mikey Gomez, Chris Liquori, Jesse Chilton, and Daniel Moraes. Who you say, Exactly.
If you are an avid reader of this site you know how we feel about Jorge Gurgel. He is one o f the worst fighters in the UFC and he is running a number of clubs in the Cincinnati area. Brown is a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu who trains with Jorge Gurgel and he is not a great BJJ instructor. He is probably learning poor technique since Gurgel’s grappling is average at best. Pete Sell is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under teacher and fellow mixed martial artist Matt Serra in East Meadow, New York. In most of Sell’s MMA fights we have never seen him use his BJJ but if this fight comes down to grappling it will be no contest. Who would you rather leanr from Matt Serra or Jorge Gurgel?
This fight will not be a ground battle; this fight will take place in the stand up. Brown is basically a bar room brawler with little of no standup technique. Sell however, has trained extensively under striking coach Ray Longo in Garden City, New York. A member of the Serra-Longo Fight Team he has fought some very top notch strikers while Brown hasn’t. Drago is also a very good technically striker that keeps his hands up while Brown throws wild punches. Sell has good technical boxing skills and has a lot of power behind his shots especially since he has moved down to fight at welterweight. Sell will be the much bigger and more powerful fighter in the fight.
Bottom Line: Brown has no business fighting in the UFC. He has no grappling and is basically a bar room brawler that has a heart when he fights. He really have no skills other than his heart but when he fights better opponent he will be exposed for his lack of talent. He is only fighting in this UFC card because he was the TUF reality series and he has a name.
Sports betting wise, at -140 this fight is a steal. How can a guy that barley has a .500 record still be fighting in the UFC. Drago is stronger, more powerful, has better grappling, has better technical striking and comes from a better training camp. This fight is a no brainer. I would lay a lot of money on a Pete Sell victory. He is a more polished MMA fighter with experience while Matt Brown needs to learn technique and skill. Let’s be honest he needs to learn how to fight. At the end of the day Matt brown does not have the power to knock out Sell but Sell does and in the TUF realtiy show he got subbed by Amir Sadollah by triangle choke in Round 2 and he was a fighter with no MMA experince.
Look at a second round KO by Drago
