UFC Light Heavyweight Fight: Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida (-285) vs. Thiago Silva

Is Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida (14-0) the best light heavyweight in the world? I really don’t think so. He has a boring awkward fighting style that frustrates fighters and he wind by weird fighting stance.

Sports betting wise both fighters are undefeated and come from great MMA camps. Yes Machida should be the sports betting favorite by most sportsbook odds makers but not at -285. Thiago Silva (13-0) at +225 is a great pick not only from an online betting perspective but because he has an above average chance to beat Machida

Plain and simple, Thiago Silva has a more direct striking style and is more powerful. His striking and kicks will get to Machida faster due to his compact Muay Tai training. Lyoto Machida trains with Anderson Silva, Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira, Antônio Rogério Nogueira, Rafael Feijao, Paulo Filho and Nino 'Elvis' Schembri which is a very fearsome training camp. Yes, Machida fights with great fighters but this fight will renew the old rivalry between Brazilian Top Team and Chute Boxe (Silva’s former club). If you do not know your MMA history BTT and Chute Boxe have a rivalry and more times than not Chute Boxe fighters win. The reason why is because of their pressure attack and straight forward but lethal striking style.

Lyoto is well-known for using a variety of Shotokan Karate techniques in his fights, which has been described as “deliberate” and “methodical” but many disapproval of his boring style. His fighting style especially his stance is awkward and he throws odd angle kicks from all directions.

In Machida’s last 6 fights 5 of them he has won by decision. He had one submission victory versus Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou at UFC 79: Nemesis by Arm Triangle Choke. If you look at that fight his Arm Triangle was very weak and if Sokoudjou was a better fighter he would have gotten out. If took a number of tries before Machida was able to even sink it in. His last fight with Tito Ortiz at UFC 84: Ill Will he was almost caught in a triangle choke. Yes by Tito Ortiz. Basically Machida danced around and would not engage with Tito and won a boring lack luster fight. Machida also had decision victories over Kazuhiro Nakamura at UFC 76: Knockout and versus average fighters David Heath at UFC 70: Nations Collide, Sam Hoger at UFC 67: All or Nothing and Vernon White. If you can't dominate a fighter like Sam Hoger and David Heath are you really a top level fighter? Yes he has fought and beaten better fighters than Silva like Stephan Bonner, Rich Franklin and BJ Penn but BJ Penn was way too fat and Rich Franklin is not a top level foghter, now or back than.

If you look at Thiago Silva fights he is a finisher. Out of his 13 wins he has 10 by KO and 2 by submission. Only one of his fights has ever come by decision which means he is a fighter that is aggressive and can put pressure on Machida. Silva has a very aggressive style and he will be able to use his striking to pressure Machida who will not be able to back track his striking style due to his sideways stance. Silva will be able to back Machida up and he will not be able to move in time and he will get caught.

This is will a striking battle between contrasting fighters. Machida is an elusive striker that likes to counter punch and kick from all angles. He has a traditional karate stance where he stands sideways and he uses odds angle push and side kicks. Sliva is a Muay Tai fighter and his striking style is much better for mixed martial arts as he will use shorter lower leg kicks that are quick and powerful. Silva was a member of the famed Brazilian Chute Boxe Academy, which produced such as Wanderlei Silva and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and his striking style is much better for mixed martial arts fighting. Not very many fighters that come from a karate background can translate in to MMA.

Machida will not be able to frustrate and hurt Silva because Silva is also a kickboxer. If you look at Machida’s fight he has never fought a true kickboxer. He did fight and beat Mike MacDaonald but he took him to the ground and submitted him. If Machida takes Silva to the ground, Silva can fight just as well on the ground because both fighters are Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belts but this will be a striking match.

One thing we know is that Silva can take a hit and keep on fighting. When Thiago fought Antonio Mendes at UFC 84: Ill Will, he was rocked by a head kick but overcame and eventually won that fight. We know that Silva can get rocked and still win but the jury is still out on Machida.

Bottom Line: Yes Machida should be the online betting favorite at most sportsbooks in this fight. He has a great camp, is a smart fighter, and can fight both on the ground and in standup. However, he has never fought a well rounded fighter like Silva who is a better more direct striker, than Machida. Silva will not be frustrated or put off by Machida’s aloof style of fighting. UFC sports bettors have to ask themselves if both fighters kick at the same time who would reach their target first? The best bets to make for this fight is a UFC prop bet for this fight to go the decision. Machida is a boring fighter that will use kicks to will back away and push off his opponent like little girls do. He will stall and runaway. Silva will land the a harder shots and score more points. Also if Machida is backaway for the entire fight he will not look good in the eyes of the judges. Remember judges are biased and they will come into this fight with preconceived notions of Machida as a boring safe fighter. Silva will win by landing the harder strikes and by pressure.

Look for a Three Round Decsion Victory by Silva for a Good Payout.
