UFC Light Heavyweight Fight: Mark Coleman vs Mauricio “Shogun” Rua

This mixed martial arts fight will be a grudge match as Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (16-3) is looking of revenge his MMA loss to Mark Coleman (15-8) when they fought at PRIDE 31: Unbreakable. The fight was stopped when Rua dislocated his elbow following a takedown by Coleman in which he landed awkwardly but Coleman continued to hit Shogun while in pain which caused a huge rift between him and the team members from Chute Boxe.

Shogun has wanted a rematch with Coleman for some time and he will be prepared to fight to avenge his loss. This is a perfect warm up fight for Shogun after his devastating upset loss to Forrest Griffin at UFC 76: Knockout as he has suffered a ruptured ACL during training, for his bout against Forrest Griffin in 2007. He has been medically cleared to regularly train again by October or November. Is Shogun ready to fight in the UFC again and can he overcome the Pride curse? Maybe not, but he will be fighting Mark Coleman who is still a one dimensional fighter and get older to be in mixed martial arts.

First, Mark Colman has not fought in over two years and at the age of 44 he is not getting any younger.  Mark Coleman was one of the best ever to fight in mixed martial arts, but he is older now and has not evolved with the sport. Yes he was inventor of the strategy that came to be known as ground-and-pound  but mixed martial arts has changed so much and has passed Coleman’s time. He is still a wrestler in a mixed martial arts world. Coleman is not a very good striker. He has short arms and has more of a body builder built and is not very mobile in the stand up. He has short stubby arms and legs and his striking is very limited due to his body frame.

If this fight stays standing Shogun is going to knock Coleman out with a kick to the head as Coleman tends to keep his hands down when he is fighting. Shogun is not just an incredible striker. He is a very well rounded fighter. Rua began training martial arts with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at the age of six and Muay Thai at seven. He was very successful in BJJ championships at the Blue and Purple belt level. Rua followed his older brother's footsteps after Murilo started training in Muay Thai with the Chute Boxe Academy. In addition to Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, he also currently trains in wrestling and western boxing.

Striking wise Shogun will use his lower legs kicks to set up the high ones. If he connects Shogun will catch Coleman in the head. What Coleman does have is his wrestling. If he does take Shogun down Coleman does not have what it takes to ground and pound Shogun out? Not at this stage in his career. On the ground Shogun has very active hips and Coleman will not be able to pin Shogun down for a ground and pound. If you look at Coleman’s fight with Fedor Emelianenko at PRIDE 32: The Real Deal and at PRIDE Total Elimination 2004 Coleman was not able to pin down the hips and he was susceptible for an arm bar. In grappling to immobilize a fighter you have to eliminate the shrimping of the hips. For an active fighter like Shogun he will not be able to fall into Coleman’s ground and pound game and Coleman has no submission skills.

UFC betting wise Shogun is a huge betting favorite at -370 at most online sportsbooks and the price might not be worth the bet but Coleman is an old fighter and I don’t give him much of a chance in this fight. So if you have the funds to spare this is a very safe bet to wager on.

Bottom Line: Much has been made about Shogun’s injuries but Mark Coleman was suppose to fight Brock Lesnar at UFC 87, however, Coleman injured his knee while training, and was forced to pull out of the event, so his health is in question as well. The difference is that Coleman is 44 while Shogun is 27 and fighters at different ages heal differently. Will Coleman’s knee hold up to shoot in and go for takedowns? I think Shogun ACL will hold up better than Coleman’s.

UFC bettors might take the betting underdog in this fight because the octagon favors wrestlers but don’t waste your money, as Shogun has the stand up advantage and the grappling advantage by a large margin. Remember you can’t win a fight by wrestling. Out of his 8 loses he has lost to good submission fighters and to very good strikers and Shogun is both. Coleman is just too old, injured and is still just a one dimensional fighter in a mixed martial arts world. He will not able to leverage his wrestling skills to score enough points in this fight.

The PRIDE 2000 Open Weight Grand Prix tournament champion was a long time ago and this is 2009 and Coleman does not have chance in this fight.
