Lightweight bout: Dustin “McLovin” Hazelett (-115) vs. Paul “Semtex” Daley (-105)

If there is one good bet to wager on for UFC 108 it is the Dustin Hazelett (16-4) fight. He will be fighting Paul Daley (32-8-2) who is coming into this fight very overrated and the lines on him are currectly very soft.

At UFC 103: Franklin vs Belfort, Daley came into this fight as a fairly big underdog when he faced Martin Kampmann. He won the fight in the first round by TKO, which lead him to this fight with Hazelett. One thing of note—as a fighter Kampmann is very over rated and was not anywhere as good as many were lead to believe. In UFC 108 Daley is the one with all the hype and Hazelett will expose his lack of talent.

Though he has good striking skills, Daley is a one dimensional fighter. Hazelett on the other hand is a very good all-round fighter who began training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at the age of 16 and earned a black belt under Jorge Gurgel. Hazelett has very, very, slick grappling skills and though he is not as tight as many top level jiu-jitsu fighters, in the MMA realm he is quite good. He likes to takes risks with his grappling game and is known to be very diverse with many entry points. His has taken fighters by armbar, inverted armbar, Anaconda Choke, Kimura as well as Triangle Choke. In a grappler versus striker match I always go with the grappler.

Hazelett has beaten some very tough opponents and holds notable wins such as in The Ultimate Fighter 7 Finale where he took Josh Burkman by step-over armbar when he transitioned from a whizzer takedown. And he was also victorious over Tamdan McCrory with a reverse armbar at UFC 91. Both submissions earned Hazelett “Submission of the Night” honors and his impressive submission victory over Burkman earned him “Submission of the Year” honors from ESPN partner Sherdog.com.

If one was to look at Daley’s record five out his eight loses have come by submission. He has fallen to good grapplers such as Jake Shields, Nick Thompson, Luiz Azeredo, Satoru Kitaoka, and Jean Silva. Hazelett skills are comparable to any one of the afore mentioned and should have no difficulty in taking down and submitting Daley.

In terms of striking Daley definitely has the advantage and can KO Hazelett but he will have a very tough time trying to do so. Daley is a pressure fighter but he will need to get in close to land his strikes but will be apprehensive of the clinch. He will try to stay outside but that is not his striking game.

Bottom Line: This fight will go to the ground and once it does it will all be Hazelett’s game. In my opinion he is one of the most underrated fighters in the UFC. His fighting style reminds me of a Jon Fitch, but with much better grappling skills. Another thing of note, Hazelett is in prime fighting condition. He was scheduled to fight Karo Parisyan on November 21, 2009 at UFC 106, however, this fight was cancelled after Parisyan pulled out the day before weigh-ins. Daley on the other hand was expecting to face Carlos Condit for this UFC, however, Condit withdrew from this fight for unspecified reasons. Mentally and physically Hazelett will be in better shape, unlike Daley who has had to change his game plan in mid-stride.

There is no doubt that Daley can strike. He is one of the top strikers in all of the United Kingdom and regularly travels to Holland to train with the K-1 heavyweight champions. However, he does not focus on is weakness, which is grappling. In MMA grapplers always fair better than those who don’t and try to rely solely on their striking skills. Hazelett will keep his distance in the octagon and once Daley is off position, he will shoot in for a takedown. Once on the ground the fight will expose Daley for his lack of skills.

The sports book oddsmakers opened up with some soft betting lines and I would take advantage of this before the odds truly reflect the fight. I would have set the lines for Hazelett at -200 instead of -115. Bet the lines while you can.

Look for Hazelett to Submit Daley with Ease in the First Round
