Lightweight Bout: Vladimir Matyushenko vs. Antônio Rogério Nogueira

According to the betting odds at BetCRIS.com, the hardest fight to pick a winner on the entire “Affliction 2: Day of Reckoning” card will be between Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Vladimir “The Janitor” Matyushenko in a rematch from much earlier in their careers.  In the first fight, Matyushenko used his wrestling skills to overcome Nogueira’s submission game and came away with a unanimous decision.  That was, however, back in August of 2002 and both fighters have improved since then so it will be interesting to see how this fight goes.

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira is the twin brother of former UFC and Pride heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira but fights at a lighter class than his brother with this bout being in the light heavyweight division.  Rogerio brings an impressive 15-3 record in this battle with most of his wins coming via submission or decision although he does have 3 knockout or technical knockout victories to his credit.  With victories over Alistair Overeem (twice), Dan Henderson, Kaz Sakuraba, and Guy Mezger, the smaller twin is no joke and has a ground game that can give anyone in the world problems.

With a black belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu under Ricardo de la Riva (who learned from Carlson Gracie Senior), the jiu jitsu game is world class but that is not all Nogueira has to offer.  He has very nice technical boxing skills and was the 2006 and 2007 Brazilian Super Heavyweight Champion as well as a bronze medalist in the 2007 Pan American games.  With a granite chin and nonstop motor, it’s hard to find a weakness with Rogerio but being overpowered by a strong wrestler with good submission skills has to be as close as you’ll get and that is what his opponent brings.

Matyushenko is a Belarusian wrestler with a 21-3 record who was given the nickname “The Janitor” by fellow wrestler Dave Schultz after he beat some highly-trained members of the U.S. squad at a meet after they had first witnessed him cleaning the mats in less-then-dressy clothes.  Since then, Matysushenko has been cleaning out opponents left and right with his strong wrestling and ground and pound background.

“The Janitor” has kept his wins nicely separated with 7 knockout/technical knockouts, 7 submissions, and 7 decisions.  Most importantly for the Belarusian is that he’s never been submitted and he has also shown a granite chin which will make it hard for Rogerio to establish much of anything in this fight.  Matyushenko has wins over Travis Wiuff, Pedro Rizzo, Vernon White, and of course the aforementioned Antonio Rogerio Nogueira on his resume and is not a fighter to be taken lightly.  Matyushenko is also the first and only light heavyweight champion the International Fight League ever had before it went out of business in the last year with “The Janitor” holding a perfect 6-0 record with the company.

Betting Wise: It’s a bit of a surprise to see Nogueira as a small -130 favorite at BetCRIS.com with Matyushenko at even money.  Considering how their first fight went I’d expect this betting line to be reversed when even when you figure out how much better Rogerio has gotten with his boxing in recent years.  Unless Rogerio can avoid the takedowns like in the first fight, this one is likely to end like the first and you’ll want to make an even money bet on the Belarusian here.

Bottom Line: Although Nogueira is a much improved boxer, it still doesn’t help him much since Matyushenko has a granite chin and the type of dominant wrestling and ground and pound that will put the Brazilian into trouble.  Matyushenko should muscle his way to many takedowns while staying away from submissions on the ground.  Nogueira better hope his takedown defense has improved a ton but since I don’t believe its good enough to stop the takedowns.

I have to call Matyushenko by decision once again.
