Heavyweight Bout: Paul Buentello vs. Kirill Sidelnikov
The best action-packed standup battle of the night will be between Paul “The Headhunter” Buentello and Russian Affliction newcomer Kirill Sidelnikov.
Paul Buentello has a professional mixed martial arts record of 26-10 with notable wins over such fighters as Gary Goodridge, Tank Abbott, Justin Eilers, and Mike Kyle with most of his victories being the knockout variety although he does have 9 submissions to go along with his 16 knockouts. Whatever the case, Buentello never fights for a decision and out of his 36 fights, only 2 have gone to the judge’s score cards with Buentello holding a 1-1 record in the fights that do.
A strong puncher and kicker out of American Kickboxing Academy, “The Headhunter” is always good to put on a show, even if it means being too aggressive and getting knocked out in the process. He was awarded a UFC heavyweight title shot against Andrei “The Pitbull” Arlovski but lasted only 15 seconds in one of the shortest fights in UFC history. Although the crowd originally booed because the camera angle appeared to show Buentello taking a dice after a glancing blow lead to the knockout, a second camera angle showed the raw power that Arlovski possesses and how it took a perfect power shot to knock out Buentello, who has shown a very good chin overall despite his aggressive striking style.
The issues with losses for Buentello have come as a result of his less-then-stellar ground game. He has suffered 7 submission losses and although most of them came much earlier in his career, you still have to wonder how good this guy is when he does get taken down. Buentello is getting older (he just turned 35 on January 16th) but still has shown he is a capable fighter and his ground skills will likely not be an issue against Sidelnikov with the Russian fighter also being a standup striker.
Kirill Sidelnikov has a 5-2 professional record with all 5 victories coming by knockout or technical knockout and his losses coming by a knockout and a decision. Sidelnikov is from the same town as Fedor Emelianenko and trains with the same team which happens to be the highly-regarded Red Devil Sport Club.
Although Sidelnikov has shown good standup skills, this is a huge rise in skill for him and one where a ground game would be most adequate but unfortunately the Russian has not shown many ground skills despite his work with ground-wizard Emelianenko. Without the submission grappling experience, this one should turn into a slugfest with both fighters having a chance to take home the victory.
Betting Wise: Buentello comes in as a -145 favorite at Bookmaker.com and it’s hard to lay off on this line. If Sidelnikov had shown any sort of ground game you would have to like him as a small underdog but he’s been purely a standup fighter to this point who is taking a massive step up as far as the skills of his opponents go. Having never been tested and fighting a striker with a very good chin and knockout skills, you have to pack the older, more experienced veteran here and hope that his increasing age hasn’t hindered his skills in the ring. Sidelnikov does have a punchers’ chance but Buentello should be able to take home this victory for his bettors.
Bottom Line: I don’t see either fighter going for a takedown and even if one gets the other on the ground, I don’t see much damage being done before the fight gets stood back up. Both guys will be swinging for the fences but Buentello will be able to weather the early storm with his strong chin and experience until he eventually catches the over-aggressive Sidelnikov with a head kick that will send down the Red Devil fighter.
This one could very possibly be over in the first round and should be a fun-to-watch slugfest
