Middleweight Bout: Matt Lindland vs. Vitor Belfort
In one of the hardest to call fights at “Affliction 2: Day Of Reckoning”, Matt “The Law” Lindland comes in as a small betting favorite over Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort but we at fighting-mma.com will be happy to steer your bet in the right direction for the January 24th event.
Matt “The Law” Lindland comes in with a 21-5 mixed martial arts record with a nice mix of TKO, submission, and decision victories which can be accredited to his ferocious Olympic level wrestling. Lindland has defeated fighters like Jeremy Horn, Travis Lutter, Phil Baroni, (twice), and Ricardo Almeida with losses against Fedor Emelianenko and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, amongst others. Lindland has moved up in weight to fight the two listed above and hasn’t been knocked out since earlier in his career when his standup game needed a ton of work. Although it’s still not perfect, Lindland has done a great job of avoiding the big punch while eventually working for the takedown.
He earned the nickname “The Law” thanks to his court battles waged in an attempt to represent the United States in the Olympics. After an All-American stint at the University of Nebraska, Lindland had to secure his Olympic roster spot through the court system. After losing in the Olympic Trials, Lindland claimed he was tripped which is a violation of Greco-Roman rules and eventually had the match overturned and won the rematch by an 8-0 final score. The Olympic Committee still tried to keep the original winner, Keith Sieracki, on the team and eventually Lindland had to take the case to the U.S. Court of Appeals and a federal judge who both decided in Lindland’s favor.
Lindland will take on Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort (17-8) who is a fierce standup fighter who has recently fallen on hard times after winning the UFC light heavyweight title back in 2004 with a victory over Randy Couture. Other victims of Belfort include Terry Martin, Marvin Eastman, Heath Herring, and Wanderlei Silva.
Belfort won a fight against Randy Couture in 49 seconds via TKO (cut) but has struggled somewhat after that when his sister was kidnapped and eventually killed. Vitor lost 5 of his next 7 after that point but has rebounded with 3 wins including a vicious second round KO of Terry Martin at “Affliction: Banned” that reestablished Vitor on the scene as one to watch out for.
With 11 of his 17 wins coming by KO or TKO, it’s no surprise what Vitor will try and do in this fight and it will be up to Lindland to avoid the big shot.
Betting Wise: Lindland comes in as a -165 betting favorite at BetCris.com and you have to like the odds at that number. As good as Belfort is on his feet, he’s struggled against wrestlers with losses to Dan Henderson (another Olympic-level wrestler), Randy Couture (also Olympic-level wrestler who holds a 2-1 advantage over Vitor in their fights) and Tito Ortiz (a ferocious takedown expert). There’s always a chance that Belfort gets the knockout since his standup is much better than Lindland’s but “The Law” has shown good avoidance skills lately and a good chin to go along with them.
Bottom Line: Lindland will be looking for a takedown every second of this fight and should be able to get them if he can avoid the big shot. Once there, look for a few boring rounds with Lindland being safe and throwing the occasional ground and pound shot with Vitor not being able to escape the blanket that “The Law” will place on him. The exciting parts of the fight will be when the fighters get stood up for inactivity but ultimately.
Lindland’s wrestling will be too much and you should expect the judges to award “The Law” with the victory
