Heavyweight Bout: Josh Barnett vs. Gilbert Yvel
Josh “The Baby Face Assassin” Barnett is a large betting favorite over Gilbert “The Hurricane” Yvel and it’s not hard to see why considering the strengths and weaknesses of both Affliction fighters.
Barnett (23-5) is an American wrestler and submission fighter who has been showing an improved standup game in recent fights. With notable wins over Jeff Monson, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Mark Hunt, Aleksander Emelianenko, Semmy Schilt, Randy Couture, and Dan Severn, it’s a mistake for anyone to take his baby face for granted.
With 14 wins coming by submission and another 4 by decision, this guy knows how to work on the ground and is usually on top. Of his losses, none have come by an actual submission (although two were technically submission by strikes and injury) with one knockout loss and one decision loss. Barnett is able to be beat on his feet but that’s only if you manage to stay upright and this guy’s chin is for real.
“The Baby Face Assassin” is a former professional wrestler who was, at one time, the UFC heavyweight champion after defeating Randy Couture but Barnett was eventually stripped of his title after testing positive for an anabolic steroid. Barnett has only lost to the best of the best and is not to be taken lightly.
Gilbert Yvel (35-12-1) is as well known for his illegal actions in his fights as much as his stunning knockout ability. With notable losses on his record due to biting, eye gouging, and knocking out the referee, Yvel is a talented but hot-headed competitor with 30 of his 35 wins coming via knockout.
Yvel does have notable wins over Fabiano Sherner, Cheick Kongo, Gary Goodridge, and Semmy Schilt but it’s his over-aggressive standup game and questionable ground skills that have gotten him into trouble. He has 3 KO/TKO losses from being a heavy puncher who does not always defend up to his standards, as well as 2 submission losses. “The Hurricane” has gone to a decision 4 times in his career and lost all of them, one to Dan Henderson who is a wrestler in the same mold as Barnett, albeit a smaller version with less submission skills.
Most of Yvel’s losses were due to opponents taking him down and submitting him which is exactly what Barnett is amongst the best in the sport at. This Dutch fighter does have extremely nice Muay Thai striking, which is typical of the Dutch, but he’ll have to show a huge improvement on his ground skills if he hopes to stay in there with the likes of a submission grappler like Barnett.
Betting Wise: Bookmaker.com lists “The Baby Face Assassin” as a -550 favorite but I can’t see going any other way with this fight. Although Yvel does have a chance at the standing knockout, it’s a very slim possibility given the chin that Barnett has shown in the past and the strengths and weaknesses that both fighters possess. It would have to be a flash knockout for Yvel to win and if it’s only a knockdown, Yvel could very well get submitted going in for the kill. Despite being a large favorite, you have to either go Barnett or nothing in this one.
Bottom Line: The price is high but a Barnett bet is safe and if you don’t want to lay the huge juice by itself, feel free to use him in a parlay. I see this fight standing up for the first minute or two until Barnett eventually gets a worthy takedown and goes to work on Yvel with punches until he eventually gets to mount. From there, Barnett can choose a variety of submissions to end the fight and should do so before the bell rings at the end of the first. .
The biggest shock of the fight might not be whether or not Barnett wins, but if this fight makes it to a second round
