WAMMA Heavyweight Championship Bout: Fedor Emelianenko vs. Andrei Arlovski
The main event at Affliction 2 will pit former Ultimate Fighting Championship heavy weight champion Andrei “Pitbull" Arlovski against the man many consider to be the greatest ever to compete in the sport of mixed martial arts, Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko. The Honda Center of Anaheim, California should be rocking for this fight that fans have been asking to see for ages and it’s a pretty tough one to call.
Fedor Emelianenko comes in with a 28-1 record but is considered to be undefeated as far as many fans are concerned since his one loss was due to a cut caused from an illegal strike that went unnoticed by the judges against Tsuyoshi Kohsaka back in December of 2000. It was Fedor’s 3rd professional mixed martial arts fight and the Russian was given a chance to get some revenge for the “loss” in 2005 and beat Kohsaka by TKO in the 1st round. Of those 28 wins, 15 have come via submission, 7 by decision, and 6 by KO/TKO.
Emelianenko is a Sambo fighting expert with the title “Master of Sports” given to him in 1997 and also has a bronze medal from the Russian Judo Championship amongst his fighting credentials. Fedor was also trained in Muay Thai kickboxing by K-1 legend Ernesto Hoost and has shown time and time again that he is one of the most complete fighters ever to grace the sport.
Andrei Arlovski will try to do what no man has been able to do and that is to legitimately defeat “The Last Emperor”. Arlovski comes in with a 14-5 record with 10 of his wins coming by KO or TKO and the Belarusian is one of the strongest standup fighters the sport has seen with his mix of hand speed, knockout power, and ability to fly around the mat while hitting angles.
“The Pitbull” is also a Sambo fighter, having won the European Youth Sambo Championship as well as the World Youth Championship. He then won silver at the Sambo World Cup and silver again at the Sambo World Championship before also being named a “Master of Sports” in his sport.
Don’t expect Arlovski to utilize his Sambo skills in this one unless they are of the defensive variety however. He’s made it a point to work on his boxing with legendary trainer Freddie Roach who has had rave reviews for the technical prowess that Arlovski has shown with the Belarusian making recent comments he plans to cross over to boxing and fight for the heavyweight title.
Bottom Line: If Fedor wins it will be by avoiding the big punch while getting inside to take the more-athletic fighter to the ground. Although “The Pitbull” has never been submitted, he has been put in some very bad situations against opponents much less skilled than Emelianenko and if Fedor rushes him and avoids the big shot, this one could be over quickly.
If Arlovski wins, he’ll use his hand speed and standup advantage to keep the better ground fighter at bay. Although Fedor does do some good things with his striking, “AA” is on another level and has shown that at any time he’s a threat to defeat his opponent with strikes. If Arlovski can use his reach advantage and takedown defense to keep this fight standing then a knockout or decision victory should not be far behind.
Betting Wise: 5Dimes.com lists Emelianenko as a -390 favorite and Arlovski as a +330 underdog currently and at those odds, you have to like your chances with Arlovski. As good as Fedor has been, “The Pitbull” has the technical boxing and athleticism to make this one interesting and Emelianenko has been caught with big punches in the past (although he has never been knocked out).
At over 3-1, you have to like Arlovski to have a chance in Affliction’s main event
