WEC Welterweight Title Contention Fight: Brock Larson vs. Carlo Prater
Interesting contenders fight Sunday with two combatants who currently are 2-1 last 3 and 4-1 last 5. If this similarity wasn’t enough both their defeats came to the current Welterweight Champion Carlos Condit. Condit is sweeping the deck in the division and desperately needs some stiff competition.
With both of Condit’s last wins coming against these two fighters it sets up an all important battle for number 1 contender and some serious revenge drama or extends Condit’s WEC legend.
22-2-1 Brock Larson is a heavy, extremely powerful Welterweight with an extensive wrestling background and moderate BJJ skills. Training out of the Minnesota Martial Arts Academy with the likes of top grapplers such as Brock Lesnar, Sean Shrek, Roger Huerta, Derek Noble and Nick Thompson, Larson comes from a camp with strong theories, principles, preparation, fitness and success.
Carlo Prater at 23-5-1 is no stranger to the MMA game, tough competition or the big fight. Prater is an underrated veteran of the ring who has many victories over top competition including a win against Carlos Condit back in 2004. He is very well rounded on the mat and has clean efficient striking. In his 23 wins only 2 were by TKO/KO, and 9 by decision. He has a big heart with tremendous spirit, and always comes into a fight well conditioned.
The key to victory for Larson will be his power and strength. It’s safe to say this fight will go to the ground, with Larson’s training focused on wrestling/grappling, takedowns and top control look for Larson to set the pace and be aggressive, passing Prater’s powerless striking. With a sub-par sprawl and lack of core strength I cannot see Larson getting stuffed routinely by Prater. I almost see him giving guard and looking to catch Brock in a submission. Brock is most comfortable on top and does have enough BJJ knowledge to deflect any danger that comes his way. With an effective fight plan in MMAA fashion look for the classic lay and pray with the odd ground and pound. If Prater is able to mount Larson look for again his size and power to take over and reverse the control. This will frustrate the weaker Prater and basically neutralize any further attack. There is no doubt in my mind Larson will be smart, patient and very tactical in his attempts to control and grind.
This fight will most likely go the distance or end by TKO late 3rd. With Larson over whelming and dominating on the ground I just cannot see how Prater will win the ground game or bring anything new on Sunday night.
