UFC Heavyweight Interm title fight: Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Frank Mir
The two Ultimate Fighter Season 8 coaches will square off and the winner will fight the newly crowned UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar to unify the UFC heavyweight division.
Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira (31-4-1-1) is the best heavyweight in the world outside of Fedor. He is also one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world. When it comes to skills and fighting Nogueira has he background, experience and skill that far surpasses his opponent Frank Mir (11-3).
UFC betting wise this fight is a no contest. Frank Mir will be dominated in the whatever position this fight ends up in, At -365 at most online sports betting sites the lines are steep but Nogueira is a top 3 heavyweight in the world while Mir might be a top 15 fighter. I would invest in this fight early and get the lines at -365 because it seems every week Frank Mir does or says something stupid that will drive the betting line even further for Nogueira
Nogueira is heads and tails much better with striking that Mir is. Nogueira has fought the best fighters in the world like Fabricio Werdum, Pawel Nastula, Sergei Kharitonov, Heath Herring, Ricco Rodriguez, and Josh Barnett. He has also gone the distance with the best heavyweight fighter in the world in Fedor Emelianenko. When it comes to experience Nogueira and Mir does not.
Nogueira credentials include:
- Judo black belt
- Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt
- RINGS: King of Kings 2000 Tournament Winner
- First PRIDE FC heavyweight Championship
- PRIDE FC Interim Heavyweight Championship
- UFC Interim Heavyweight Championship
- PRIDE FC 2004 Heavyweight Grand Prix Runner-up
- First fighter to hold both the UFC and PRIDE FC Heavyweight Championships
If you compare Mir background and experience he is nowhere in the same league as Nogueira
Mir is a good grappler but Nogueira is a great grappler and if this fight goes to the ground he will be able to submit Mir. Throughout the TUF show Mir has commented about Big Nog’s ground game as simple. Nogueira’s background in jiu jitsu and mixed martial arts started with Brazilian Top Team which was a spin off from Carlson Gracie jiu jitsu. If you know the history of Jiu Jitsu, the Carlson brand of BJJ focused more on simplicity combined with aggression. He studied Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Ricardo de la Riva Goded. If you do not know who de la Riva is, he was one of Carlson Gracie’s best fighters ever.
If you recall the TUF episode where Vinicius Magalhães, where he criticized Nogueira grappling game as simple. He also commented to Frank Mir that Antonio Nogueira's Jiu-Jistu is not of a high level. If Magalhães every faced Nogueira is a grappling fight he would lose because his high risk flying arm arms would never work on a grappler like Nogueira. Flying arms might work on the inexperienced fighter but they will never work on a fighter with good fundamentals. It was better to be solid and have great base and fundamentals and always be attacking. This fits Nogueira grappling game as he focuses on technique rather than fancy high risk maneuvers.
Yes his game is simple but it is very effective. If you at Frank Mir grappling he is a very good grappler but he is not as technically sound as Nogueira. Nogueira’s ground game is to always attack and out pressure on his opponent. He applies multiple angles to enter the same submission attempts. Nogueira does not go for high percentage submission attempts unlike Mir grappling game.
Mir is a good grappler but when facing a fighter that has a good tight base with excellent fundamentals all those high risk submission attempts would be foiled. Mir has been working a lot with world champion grappler Robert Drysdale and Eddie Bravo. Both fighter are very good unorthodox grapplers that like to do high percentage grappling. However, in mixed martial arts the lock down and rubber guard are no where nearly as affective as they are in Jiu Jitsu tournaments. In addition, Frank Mir’s body type does not fit the rubber guard and his seems a lot too large to get a lot of these high percentage moves. If Mir tries to do any mission control, lock down or rubber guard moves Nogueira will post up and get out of those moves quite easily.
If this fight goes to the ground, Nogueira has a very good top ground game and can fight from his back and on top, while Mir is a better bottom ground fighter. Grappling wise Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira has submitted some of the best top level fighters in the world like Tim Sylvia at UFC 81: Breaking Point, Mirko Filipović at PRIDE Final Conflict 2003, Dan Henderson at Pride 24 Cold Fury 3, Bob Sapp at PRIDE Shockwave, Enson Inoue at Pride 19 Bad Blood, Mark Coleman at Pride 16 Beasts From The East, Gary Goodridge at Pride 15 Raging Rumble and Valentijn Overeem. When if comes to grappling Nogueira has beaten highly level grapplers, wrestlers, and strikers. There is nothing that Frank Mir has in ground game that will bother Nogueira.
Many do not know that Nogueira is a great takedown fighter as well. He has a black belt in judo and has been training in judo since the age of fight. So if this fight goes to the clinch Nogueira will be able to use his leverage and take Mir down when he wants.
Though both fighters are very good ground fighters this fight will be won in the stand up striking. Nogueira is a very proficient striker as he trains annually with the Cuban National Boxing and has had aspirations to box in the Olympics for Brazil. Mir does not have any stand up skills and usually likes to fight to get the fight on the ground from his back. Out of his 11 wins he only has one by knockout and that was against Wes Sims at UFC 46: Supernatural, in a fight he was losing. If Mir can not get the fight to the ground he is trouble and will get knocked out. Out of all his 3 losses (Brandon Vera, Marcio Cruz, and Ian Freeman) he lost because he could not get the fight to the ground. For Mir he has to pick his poison. Doe she want to get hurt by Nogueira’s standup or get submitted on the ground. There is no question that Nogueira has the much better stand up and this is where the fight will be won. Remember that Nogueira has never been knocked out in his mixed martial arts career and he has fought the best strikers in the world.
Bottom Line: Nogueira also wins the intangible category as well. Nogueira is a fighter that never gives up. He was rocked by Heath Herring at UFC 73: Stacked and still survived. If you look on the coaches challenge in the Ultimate fighter show, Nogueira was going for and diving for every soccer ball while Mir did not. This shows that Nogueira has a better work ethic and will fight until you can fight no more. Mir does not have the desire, drive and heart that Nogueira has. Combined with his work ethic and talent there is no way Mir will be able to beat Nogueira.
Also Mir has never been known as a hard worker as he has traditionally done just enough to stay in shape. On the other hand, when Nogueira train he trains with Black House which is a MMA club that was started by former Brazilian Top Team member and black belt Carlos Barreto, Jorge Guimaraes and Rogerio Camoes. The club currently enrolls Anderson Silva the current UFC Middleweight Champion, Rafael Feijao, Paulo Filho, Lyoto Machida and Nino 'Elvis' Schembri. Frank Mir trains at Striking Unlimited where he is currently a trainer.
Nogueira has trained with the best, and after over 30 fights has never been finished, even Fedor could not do it to him. I have never seen Nogueira gas, I have never seen Nogueira give up, and he has never been finished. He got his black belt from Del la Riva, a well known blackbelt. What can Mir do in this fight? Absolutely nothing.
Standup or On the Ground Nogueira Will Dominate
