UFC Middleweight fight: Amir Sadollah vs. Nick Catone

If there is any question of favorable betting lines for UFC sports betting, this fight is the perfect example. Amir Sadollah (1-0) was winner of SpikeTV's The Ultimate Fighter 7 last season and he will definitely get the TUF betting bump for this fight because he has  been on TV all last year in the reality show while on has ever heard of his opponent..

Amir Sadollah came on to the show with no professional record in mixed martial arts and his record in MMA is 1 and 0. To be honest, Amir has potential to be a great MMA fighter one day but with a 1 and 0 record he is still unproven. Yes he has a 4 and 0 amateur record in MMA but the jury is still out if he is has what it takes to be in the UFC.

I like Sadollah’s ground game, heart and potential skill but he will be stepping in the ring with Nick Catone (5-0) who has very heavy hands and even better kicks. He will be a tough test for Sadollah and betting wise is the stronger and more power fighter between the two. Nick Catone has fought no one great in his MMA career but 4 out of his last 5 fights have ended in the first round with 3 victories by TKO. Yes the guys he had fought all have losing records but they are fighters while Sadollah is still an unproven talent.

Sports betting wise, the UFC betting lines should open up with Sadollah as a large betting favorite since many online sportsbook odds makers have no clue about who Nick Catone is. This is a good value bet as Nick Catone the ability to take out Sadollah on their feet.

Nick Catone is the current United States Kickboxing Association (USKBA)middleweight champion. His striking, especially kicking skills far outmatch Sadollah and he will hurt Sadollah in the standup. Catone is the far superior fighter in striking and he will hurt Sadollah with lower leg kicks that will set up his high leg kicks. I don’t think Sadollah has ever fought a fighter with such high level technical striking skills. Amir Sadollah is a good fighter with a great heart but does he have the striking skills to hurt Catone? At this point in his career I don’t think so. He will get favorable betting odds because in this fight because everyone has seen Amir fight but no one has ever seen Catone fight.

Grappling wise, Amir is a very good grappler as he was able to defeat Steve Byrnes by armlock to get a spot in the house. While on the show, he went up against skilled wrestler Gerald Harris and won the fight by TKO in the second round. Amir than went on to fight "The Immortal" Matt Brown in the quarterfinals and defeated Brown by Triangle Choke. He then moved onto the semi-finals against C.B. Dollaway, where he put Dollaway in an armbar in the third round. On the season finale of TUF 7, Amir had to fight CB Dollaway again and he easily disposed of him with another armbar in the first round.

Amir Sadollah is the better submission fighter in this fight with some promising skills but we had yet to see him fight a real grappler. Technically, Amir has decent skills but his skills are not world class. He was able to defeat some pretty one dimensional fighters on the show; however, he will have a tough time with Catone. Catone on the other hand, has fought for two major regional promotions on the East Coast and currently trains out of UFC middleweight Ricardo Almeida’s gym in New Jersey. If Catone trains with Almeida he will have decent grappling skills to complement his impressive stand up game. He will have a good take down defense and if Amir takes him to the ground he will have a good closed guard game. Training with Almeida mean you will be technically good on the ground.

Besides the striking advantage, Nick Catone has very good wresting skills. He wrestled all 5 years in college NCAA Division I, where he still trains today. Amir will want to try to take this fight to the ground but Catone will be the stronger fighter and it will be hard to take Catone down due to his wresting credentials.

Catone’s wrestling credits include:

  • 2x NCAA Div. I Conference Champion 2001, 2004
  • 2x NCAA Div. I National Qualifier 2001, 2004
  • Ranked As High As 7th In The Nation At 184lbs in 2004
  • 100 Career NCAA Div. I wins
  • Hold the All-Time Single Dual Meet Season Takedown Record at Rider
  • University With (100) Takedowns, Old Record (65)
  • Beast of East Champion 2004
  • Southern Scuffle Champion 2004
  • Male Athlete of the Year, Rider University 2004 (Wrestling)
  • Four Year Letterman, NCAA Div.1
  • Captain 2003-2004 Season

Bottom Line: Sadollah had never fought pro before being selected to compete on the seventh season of The Ultimate Fighter. He was successful on the show to defeat Gerald Harris, Matt Brown, and C.B. Dollaway (twice) en route to becoming the winner of the show’s middleweight tournament but now he has to face higher level fighters.

This fight will be won in the standup position and Catone has the better skills and can hurt Amir from a distance with his kicks. I see Amir trying to close the distance and he will get hurt as he tries to rush in.

Even though the betting lines have not come out, Amir Sadollah will definitely be the sportsbook odds makers betting favorite. This is a perfect opportunity to take advantage of the sportsbook odds makers’ lack of knowledge in mixed martial arts.

Yes Amir will be a great fighter one day, but he is fighting a great world champion striker with a very good grappling coach. If Catone can stays on the outside and use his strikes he will beat Sadollah. I feel Sadollah is still too green to fight in the UFC, but to his credit he won the 6 figure contract.

Catone is very well rounded with top level striking skills, NCAA wrestling, and one of the best grappling coaches in North America. I highly recommend people to jump all over this bet. Amir has great heart as a fighter but he is fighter a real beast and I don’t see him over powering or controlling this fight like how he did during the reality show.

One fight does not make you an MMA fighter and Catone will expose his weakness
