UFC Lightweight fight: Sean Sherk vs. Tyson Griffin

This is going to be the most boring fight in UFC history as two wrestlers will try to take each other down and try to ground and pound each other out. Tyson Griffin (12-1) is a young and future version of his opponent Sean the Muscle Shark Sherk (33-3-1) but that is at least 3 to 4 years away.

Despite being a boring fighter Sherk is a very good fighter and his record of 33 wins and 3 proves that he can fight. His only 3 losses have come to B.J. Penn at UFC 84: Ill Will, Georges St. Pierre at UFC 56: Full Force and Matt Hughes at UFC 42: Sudden Impact and two of those loses came at welterweight, as he has only one loss at the UFC lightweight division

UFC Sports betting wise the online sportsbooks might be soft on the online betting lines since Sean Sherk’s last fight was a KO loss to BJ Penn. But if you look at that fight Sean Sherk was holding his own in that fight and took a lot of punishment and Tyson Griffin does not have near the striking that BJ Penn has. The UFC odds might be soft for this fight and not as steep as they should be so a large bet on Sherk would be the best bet.

Tyson Griffin started his mixed martial arts career with a bang and as his first 7 wins came by KO or submission with very impressive KO's over Duane Ludwig and top pound for pound fighter Urijah Faber.  However since he has fought in the UFC, Griffin only has one victory inside the ring and that was a Rear Naked Choke submission over David Lee.

After that submission Griffin has four straight decision victories over top lever guys but I though the lost the fight to Clay Guida at UFC 72: Victory and he fights against Gleison Tibau and Thiago Tavares were closer than most people think.

Tyson Griffin is one of the best fighters on the UFC but he is still a ways from the top level fighters like Sean Sherk. Sherk is not the most exciting fighter but he does have the ability to finish and submit fighters, more so than Griffin. Out if his 33 victories Sherk has 8 wins by KO and 11 by submission and his submission skills are much better than Griffin’s.

Sean is a wrestler through and through and began wrestling at the young age of 7. Over his 11 year wrestling career he racked up over 400 matches. Tyson Griffin does not have near as much wrestling skills and experience to threaten Sherk in this fight. He is a good wrestler but he wrestled four years in high school and one year in Junior College which means he has wrestling skills but not the skills a person that went to a NCAA college.

There is no way the Griffin will be able to take Sherk down in this fight. The knock on Sherk is that he is too much of a wrestler turned MMA fighter. He currently coaches a team of fighters with coaches Greg Nelson, at the Minnesota Martial Arts Academy which is a MMA school for wrestlers that want to go MMA. Other fighters include Brock Lesnar, Brock Larson, Nick Thompson, Logan Clark, Jacob Volkmann, Kaitlin Young, Nat McIntyre and Saul Mitchell.

The knock of Sherk was that he is a more of a wrestler and not a complete MMA fighter but in this fight it actually helps him as Sherk will be fighting a similar type of fighter. Griffin is the type of fighter that likes to push the pace of the fight and like to over work his opponent with pressure and relentless wrestling skills. However that is the exact same fighting stlye of Sherk. Griffin is a strong fighter but no where near as strong as Sherk and Sherk will dominate the top game and nullify Griffin’s pressure game.

Striking wise Sherk is a better technical striker that likes to keep his hands up while Griffin is more wild and likes to throw looping punches. Sherk keeps his chin down and hands up and is it hard to get through with punches unless you jab out but Griffin is not a great technically striker and he will get all his shots checked by Sherk.

Grappling wise I have said it over and over again, Sean Sherk has little bitty arms that resembles a T-Rex and a huge neck. How can you arm bar a guy with such little arms and how can you triangle choke or rear naked choke someone with the neck like Sherk’s. In 36 fights no ones has ever submitted Sherk and Griffin is not that great a grappler to even threaten him.

Bottom Line: This will be a boring fight where Griffin will try to pressure Sherk but Sherk will avoid his pressure and either out strike to take Griffin down. Sherk has way too much experience and a far better skill set that will out work the normally hard working Griffin. Sherk will score pints with his jabs and will get the takedown points for a boring 3 round victory.

It is hard to say what the sportsbook lines will open with but, Sherk will definitely be the favorite. If the lines open up at anywhere under -200, I would bet a lot on Sherk. I would presume that Sherk should open up at -250 which is still a good opening line. The best bet would be to make a prop bet for this fight to go the distance and for Sherk to win a 3 round decision. These are the best UFC prop bets to make. Sports betting wise place a bet on Sherk to win and make 2 UFC proposition bets on the fight to go the distance and for Sherk to win a three round decision. To maximize you bet even further try to parlay all three bets into one.

Look for Sherk to win a boring three round fight with take down points and jabs
