UFC Lightweight fight: Gray “The Bully” Maynard vs. Rich “No Love” Clementi

Rich “No Love” Clementi (40-12-1) is a veteran in mixed martial arts and his 53 MMA fights means he is a person that will not be fazed by what Gray "The Bully" Maynard (5-0) has for him.

The online sportsbooks will have Gray Maynard as a pretty big favorite in this fight but I think Clementi will win this fight due to his experience and for his ability to frustrate Maynard. Betting wise Maynard is coming off an impressive victory over Frank Edgar at UFC Fight Night 13 but he was fighting a fighter that is similar to his fighting style. Clementi is a well rounded fighter that will throw Maynard off his game plan.

I think Maynard will be a good fighter one day but I think he is still a little too immature in the UFC octagon. He has great work ethic out of the ring from his wrestling background and his MMA club at Team Quest but when he fights he takes unnecessary chances in the ring and is not a mature fighter yet as his 5 MMA fights prove this.

Gray Maynard has some very good basic skills. He is an accomplished wrestler as he wrestled with a good NCAA Division 1 College in the Michigan State University with Rashad Evans where he was MSU co-captain and received All-American honors but is no bully like his nicknames dictates. Out of Maynard’s 5 fights 3 have come by a decision and one by a rookie mistake in a double knock out against Rob Emerson at the Ultimate Fighter 5 Finale. Yes Maynard can fight but he is no bully and he does not push the pace to finish his fights.

Maynard is a good up and coming fighter that likes to push the pace in a fight but he still does not have the skills to finish his opponents. In his fight with Frank Edgar at UFC Fight Night 13 he won a 30-27 unanimous decision by using his superior wrestling to push the pace to take the fight with a decision. He was dominating throughout the fight but for some reason he could not finish Edgar.

Clementi has found a new life to his mixed martial arts game since his fight with Melvin Guillard at UFC 79 – Nemesis where he and Guillard had a fuel going into the fight. The Guillard fight was controversial when Clementi made an obscene gesture by standing up and thrusting his pelvis after Guillard tapped. After the obscene gesture, Guillard was restrained as he attempted to fight Clementi again. This has seemed to spark life back into Clementi’s career.

Clementi has very good striking skills with 15 TKO victories. If this fight stays standing Clementi will win the striking war as Maynard has an upright striking stance. He has the typical wrestlers striking stance and he tends to lean a little too forward and is a little too upright like most wrestlers who have turned to mixed martial arts. Clementi has some good KO victories and I see him winning the standup war with odds angle shots. Maynard has better kicks in this fight and that will be his key to victory if he can get off kicks to the body.

If Maynard takes Clementi down, Clementi is the much better grappler than most peopel think. Maynard is a ground and pound fighter that likes to hold his opponents down but Clementi is a very good submission fighter from his back and he is very good at rear naked chokes. If Clementi gains top position on the ground he will be able to submit Maynard.

Clementi has been around the fight game and fought every type of fighter with wins over top leverl grapplers like Fabio Holanda, heavy strikers like Sam Stout at UFC 84 - Ill Will, Terry Etim at UFC 83 - Serra vs. St. Pierre II and Anthony Johnson at UFC 76 – Knockout and wrestlers like Ryan Schultz. He has won his last 6 fights by submission, by decision and by knockout which proves that he can fight in any situation and finish fights in any fashion. That is the intangible factor in this fight which Maynard has not acquired as a MMA fighter yet.

Bottom Line: On paper Maynard looks to be the better fighter but he is not proven in my opinion and he will be fighting a very good fighter that most people will over look; especially the sports book oddsmakers. This is a great underdog bet to make and the odds will be pretty good in favor of Rich “No Love” Clementi. His nickname is pretty correct as he gets no love from the world but he is a very good fighter with a well rounded game.

Look for Clementi to win the stand up battle at the beginning and once Maynard takes the fight to the ground Clementi will be able to fight from the ground and eventually get a secure a rear naked choke.

He may be called No Love but he will best the sportsbooks at UFC 90
