UFC 88 Breakthrough UFC Welterweight Fight: Matt Brown vs Dong Hyun Kim Matt Brown (7-6) was supposed to be one of the best fighters in the seventh season of The Ultimate Fighter television series. However he did not live up to the hype and his 7 and 6 record was hard to market on the show as he lost to Amir Sadollah by Triangle Choke. Throughout the show everyone talked about how tough Matt Brown was but in reality he is a below average fighter with decent striking skills. No idea why Matt Brown is back in the UFC but he will be fighting a very tough Korean fighter in Dong Hyun Kim (10-0-1) who is undefeated at 10-0 with one draw. Kim is a very heavy handed fighter who gained recognition in 2007 after knocking out DEEP welterweight champion Hidehiko Hasegawa in a non-title bout. Not only does Kim have very good striking but he is also vet good on the ground. Matt Brown is basically a bar fighter with some grappling experience. He is a blue belt under UFC underachiever instructor Jorge Gurgel. If he is learning grappling under Gurgel he is most likely not learning proper technique and fundamentals. This is best exemplified by his lack of technique when he got submitted by Amir Sadollah, a person with no MMA ring experience. The Immortal Matt Brown is way overrated and is a one dimensional fighter that will be overmatched by Kim in this fight. He does have heavy hands but this is mixed martial arts and Kim will expose his lack of striking technique and hurt Brown with speed and striking technique. The difference between the two fighters is that Kim can fight on the ground. Five out of Matt Brown’s six loses have been by submission. Kim has he ability to fight on the ground and will be able to set up his powerful strikes for takedowns. Once Kim has Brown on the ground it will be over quite quickly. Even though Kim has very has good striking as everyone will be expected for both fighters to strike; Kim is also a very smart fighter and will only use his striking to set up takedowns to fight on the ground. Kim is technically sound fighter and he is very agile and has a very good top game. He is a southpaw fighter and his stance will throw off Brown. Once When Kim fights he sets up both his lower and high legs kick and than comes forward with a straight left hand that surprises many fighters, as he is very good at setting up his punches and kicks. Brown on the other hand is striker that uses strength when he punches. He has no technique and his striking style is something that resembles a bar fighter not a MMA fighter. Brown will come into the fight as the stronger fighter but strength will be trumped by technique. Many might think Kim has not fought top level fighters or has no octagon experience but he already has one fight in the UFC where he KO’ed hard hitting Jason Tan at UFC 84. Bottom Line: The UFC betting odds have not been put out and won’t likely be put out until just days before the event. Because Matt Brown had so much hype as a very tough guy and was on the TUF reality show the online betting lines might have him as a favorite. Kim might come into this fight as the underdog so no matter what, the betting odds will be very close. I would lay a lot of money on Kim to beat Matt Brown. Does Matt Brown have the skill to be a UFC fighter? Well the reality show proved that he doesn’t have the talent and Dong Hyun Kim will expose Brown's game for the many holes it has.
