UFC Middleweight Fight: Dan Henderson vs Rousimar "Toquinho" Palhares
Hollywood Dan Henderson (22-7) really needs a win in the UFC. Thought he fought two great pound for pound mixed martial arts fighters he has come up short in both title fights against Quinton Rampage Jackson at UFC 75: Champion vs Champion and against Anderson Silva at UFC 82: Pride of a Champion.
He now gets a good fight to get back on the winning track against a tough Brazilian in Rousimar "Toquinho" Palhares (8-1) who is a great submission specialist. Does he has the submission skills to make Henderson tap? Henderson has only been submitted three times in his career and that was against Anderson Silva, and both Nogueira brothers Antonio Rogerio and Antonio Rodrigo by arms bars at PRIDE Total Elimination 2005 and PRIDE 24: Cold Fury 3. Is Palhares in the same category as those three grapplers and does Palhares have the skills to tap Henderson? No.
At 185 Henderson is the best UFC middleweight outside of Anderson Silva by far. Henderson has fought every top level fighter in the middleweight, light heavyweight and heavy weight division. He mixed martial arts resume is a who’s who if the best fighters in the world. He has fought Wanderlei Silva, Vitor Belfort, Kazuo Misaki, Murilo Bustamante, Akihiro Gono, Ryo Chonan, Yuki Kondo, Kazuhiro Nakamura, Shungo Oyama, Ricardo Arona, Ninja Rua, Akira Shoji, Renzo Gracie, Renato Sobral, Gilbert Yvel, Carlos Newton, and Allan Goes.
Henderson is no stranger to fighting Brazilians as he has fought every top level Brazilian fighter in the world. Is Palhares a top level Brazilian or a top level MMA fighter? No. Henderson comes from one of the best MMA camps in the world at Team Quest and he trains with top level fighters like Matt Lindland and Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou.
Palhares has not fought any to level fighter in his career and he has a submission armbar victory over Ivan Salaverry at UFC 84 - Ill Will, but Salaverry is no where in the same league as Henderson.
Striking wise Henderson is so much better than Palhares. He has KO’ed Wanderlei Silva and went toe to toe with Quinton Jackson so no amount of training in striking can catch up to Henderson’s power and skill. Henderson has a deceptive looping overhand right than will hurt Palhares in this fight. Wrestling wise Henderson has a huge advantage and there will be no way Palhares will be able to hold Henderson on the ground. He has such freakish strength from his days wrestling that it will be hard for Palhares to keep him on the ground if he it goes to the ground.
Bottom Line: Don’t look for an upset in this fight. North American fans have not seen thet true Henderson fight yet, and even though he has lost his last two fights he fought two top ten pound for pound fighters. Because he has lost two straight fights and Palhares is 8 and 1 the online betting lines have opened up way to low by the sportsbook oddsmakers at -185. A fighter with Henderson’s caliber should have him at least -250 or -300. Because of the favorable lines I would lay a lot in Henderson to win because he is such a well rounded fighter
and heads and tails above Palhares as a fighter.
Look for Henderson to KO Palhares
