UFC Welterweight Title Fight: Georges St. Pierre vs. Jon Fitch

As a UFC bettor, I thought the betting lines would open up with a much larger betting lines and going into this online bet at -320 at most online sportsbooks is a great line. As the fight gets closer the lines should increase in favor for GSP even more. I assume by the time the fight hits the lines will be around -400, so I would take this UFC betting line immediately. The online UFC sports betting line for the main event of UFC 87 Seek and Destroy are pretty good if you want to bet on Jon Fitch. Though I think Georges "Rush" St. Pierre (16-2) will win this fight it will be hard for him to do so. If there is a bet to be made the ideal bet is to bet on a UFC prop bet for the Over on the over/under bet for a five round fight.

Jon Fitch (17-2-1) will give GSP a good run for his money. However, in every aspect of fighting, Georges St Pierre is just a little bit better, and that includes wrestling. You can break down this fight into 3 components striking, wrestling and grappling. The difference between the two fighters is that St. Pierre seeks out the best in every discipline. He trains with the best and most fundamentally sound wrestlers, strikers and grapplers. Fitch on the other hand trains with a good club that does everything well but does not focus as much on technique and fundamentals compared to GSP who seeks out and trains in that disipline. From there he will go to his camp and will combine everything together.

Striking: There is no doubt that GSP is better than Fitch in this category. Georges’ striking is what leads him to do everything else in a fight. St. Pierre also trains in boxing with Howard Grant and Otis Grant at the Grant Brothers Gym in Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Quebec. He gets the chance to spar with world champ Joachim Alcine in boxing so GSP’s fundamentals in striking are very sound. His striking dictates what he will do in a fight. In his fight with Matt Hughes, GSP used his lower leg kicks to set up takes downs. In his fight with Matt Serra, St. Pierre used punches and to set up a takedown. St Pierre’s game is to use his striking which will lead to takedowns. Jon Fitch does not have no where nears as good striking ability as GSP. Out of his 17 MMA victories only five have come by KO or TKO. His only good victory by stand up is his TKO won over Thiago Alves at UFC: Ultimate Fight Night 5. GSP on the other hand has superior striking abilities with wins by TKO over Matt Serra, Matt Hughes, Jay Hieron, Travis Galbraith, and Sean Sherk. If this entire fight is in the stand up position, GSP will punish Fitch with either kicks or dominate striking. Fitch does not have the power to KO St. Pierre as his striking is just too good.

Wrestling: You might have thought Fitch would dominate GSP in this section and that was true 3 to 4 years ago but not today. Fitch was a member of the Purdue wrestling team and wrestled under the Tom Erikson and eventually became the team captain of his wrestling squad. Despite his wresting career at university Fitch was never atop the collegiate level. GSP has closed the wrestling gap of his mixed martial arts game by wrestling with the Canadian National wrestling team. On a daily basis, GSP fights with top level wrestler and holds his only on a Gecko Roman wrestling level. St. Pierre’s wrestling has become so much better and when he comes his wrestling in to MMA he is on par or better than Fitch. GSP trains with NCAA wrestler Rashad Evans and Keith Jardine who are much bigger bodies so when the time comes to fighting Fitch he will have no problem with his strength. GSP has more strength and is on par or better than Fitch in grappling due to his size and raw power. If Fitch tries to take him down GSP can out power and get up from his back or out of Fitch’s side control.

Grappling: St. Pierre received his brown belt in BJJ from Renzo Gracie on July 21, 2006 after working up to his purple belt with Fabio Holanda at Brazilian Top Team Canada. GSP has very good fundamental grappling skills by working with a gi and with some of the best BJJ instructors around. GSP’s fight with Matt Hughes was a Brazilian jujitsu clinic as his submission transition game was phenomenal. When is comes to grappling there is no doubt Georges St. Pierre has much better skills. He was able to submit wrestlers like Matt Hughes and dominates Fitch’s training partner Josh Koscheck at UFC 74 - Respect for five rounds. Fitch has a Guerilla jiu-jitsu black belt under Dave Camarillo which is a combo of Brazilian jiu-jitsu and judo together and gears it toward mixed martial arts. But guess what this type of jiu-jitsu does neglect a lot of basic fundamentals and basic techniques. GSP trains with top level grapplers like Nathan Marquardt and at the American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) there are great strikers like Mike Swick, Josh Thomson, Daniel Puder, Trevor Prangley, Josh Koscheck, Cung Le, Bobby Southworth but no great graplers to push Fitch.

Fitch is a very good fighter and if he was fighting any other fighter in the 170 pound welterweight division he would beat. He has already beaten top level fighters like Josh Burkman at UFC: Ultimate Fight Night 4, Thiago Alves at UFC: Ultimate Fight Night 5, Luigi Fioravanti at UFC 68: The Uprising, WEC top fighter Brock Larson at UFC: Ultimate Fight Night 2 and Diego Sanchez at UFC 76: Knockout.  He is on 15 fight win streak and is a very well rounded fighter.

Bottom Line: This fight will go similar to GSP’s fight with Josh Koscheck. In whatever three categories GSP decides to take this fight he will dominate Fitch in. Since GSP has fought in the UFC he has fought every top level fighter. He has not been given easy fights and every fight is against a top ten fighter like Matt Hughes (twice), Josh Koscheck, B.J. Penn, Frank Trigg, Jason Miller, Matt Serra, Karo Parisyan and Sean Sherk. GSP has a better training camp and is just that much better. Jon Fitch will be overwhelmed and he will be in counter fight mode throughout much of the fight. Fitch will be able to defend but will not score many points.

Look for Georges St. Pierre to beat on Fitch by overwhelming him in every aspect for fighting at UFC 87 for a five round unanimous decision
