UFC 87: Seek and Destroy UFC Lightweight Fight: Manny Gamburyan vs. Rob Emerson Out of all the mixed martial arts fights at UFC 87 Seek and Destroy the best online UFC bet to make is Manny Gamburyan (8-2) to beat Rob Emerson (7-6-1). Rob Emerson is a really game fighter with lots of heart but little talent. Manny Gamburyan on the other hand is a great judoka with good striking skills. Manny Gamburyan has only lost twice and that was to Sean Sherk and to Nate Diaz at The Ultimate Fighter 5 Finale in a match he was winning before he was injured. The UFC betting lines for this fight at Bookmaker.com currently have Manny Gamburyan as a sports betting favorite at +265 with Rob Emerson at +215. I personally thought the sportsbooks oddsmakers would set the line at around -300 or -325 for this fight so for me this is a great online bet to make. Rob Emerson is a hard working fighter that gained fame through the Ultimate Fighter Reality show but his skills are limited. The reason why the lines are so soft is because people have seen Emerson’s heart and the fact he is a good looking guy. Emerson puts on a good fight with the little skills he has and Dana White loves the fact he puts on a great fight but if you break down his game he really does not have a lot of skills. Manny Gamburyan has a good pedigree and is the younger cousin of fellow UFC fighter Karo Parisyan. Gamburyan began training in judo at Gokor Chivichyan's Hayastan MMA Academy and quickly became one of the top judokas in the country. Gamburyan started winning junior nationals in just two years after he started training in judo. He went on to win junior nationals eight times, the junior Olympics once, and was a member of the 2000 judo junior world team. Emerson does not have near as much skills on the ground than Gamburyan and if this fight goes to the ground Gamburyan’s aggressive style of attack will be too much for Emerson as five out his eight wins have come by submission. Manny Gamburyan was winning his fight at the Ultimate Fighter 5 Finale but lost because of a shoulder injury. Striking wise there is a slight edge that goes to Emerson but the problem with striking against Gamburyan is that he is so short it will be hard to land effective shots. As soon as the fight starts Gamburyan will close the distance and go immediately for a take down. Even though Emerson will want to keep this fight standing I don’t see anyway the striking came last for more than 30 seconds and in that time Emerson does not have the KO power to hurt Gamburyan. Emerson is on the fight card because he puts on a great show but he does not have the skills to hurt top level opponents. His no contest fight with Gray Maynard he was being dominated the first round (the only effective work of Emerson’s being a flying knee and a takedown). In the second round, Gray picked up Emerson and slammed him to the canvas. Due to an aggravated injury of the ribs, Emerson submitted, however, Maynard accidentally knocked himself on the floor and rendered himself unconscious. Bottom Line: Emerson has never been submitted but he has never fought the style of Gamburyan. Gamburyan is a pit bull. He is constantly pushing the pace of the fight and does not let the other fighter fight their game plan. Gamburyan will storm in and will use his great judo takedowns to throw Emerson. If Gamburyan is in Emerson’s guard or half guard he will rain down punches. Emerson does not have the grappling skills to get out of Gamburyan’s ground and pound. As a UFC bettor I see no way in betting on the underdog as Gamburyan is just such a compact fighter that Emerson will not be able to use his striking on him. For me this fight is as much of a lock at there is in this UFC. This fight will go to the ground and Emerson trains his striking with Colin Oyama, the former trainer of Quinton Jackson.
