UFC Heavyweight Fight: Brock Lesnar vs. Heath Herring

For a mixed martial arts fighter with only 2 fights (one victory over Min Soo Kim a fighter who took the fight on two weeks notice) why is WWE turned MMA fighter Brock Lesnar an online sport bettor’s favorite at -260 at Bookmaker.com?

This will be Brock Lesner’s (1-1) third mixed martial arts fight and he will be fighting a very experienced fighter in Heath “The Texas Crazy Horse" Herring (28-13-1). There is no way that Herring should be the underdog in this fight. Online sportsbooks are giving Lesner the favorite in this fight because he is a former WWE star and a big name. However, he is still unproven in real fighting NOT sports entertainment. He hasn’t even made it out of the first round yet in any of his two fights.

There is no way Lesber should be that much a favorite until he can prove he actually has skills to fight in MMA. Heath Herring has the skills and is very well rounded in MMA. He has fought almost every top heavyweight in the world like, Cheick Kongo at UFC 82: Pride of a Champion, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira three times, Brad Imes, Gary Goodridge, Mirko Filipovic at PRIDE 26, Fedor Emelianenko at PRIDE 23, Igor Vovchanchyn at PRIDE 19, Mark Kerr at Pride 15, Vitor Belfort at Pride 14, Enson Inoue, Tom Erikson, Travis Fulton and Even Tanner. Each one of these fighters was and is a top ten level fighter while Brock Lesner is still unproven. Herring may have lost some of those fights but he has lost to very top level fighters.

Lesner might be a good fighter but he has yet to prove himself and fighting a veteran like Herring is a bad match up for him. Lesner was supposed to fight Mark Coleman and he would have destroyed him since they both had the same fighting styles and Coleman is an aging verteran. But now that Coleman had to withdraw Lesner is fighting a fighter who has great stand up skills and well as grappling skills. Lesner is a much better wrestler than Herring and has the more powerful frame and strength in this fight. In NCAA wrestling he was the 2 Time Big Ten Title (1999-2000), 2000 NCAA Division I Champion, 2 Time NJCAA All American, and Ranked the #1 Heavyweight in the Big Ten (2000). Wrestling wise Brock is way better but this is mixed martial arts and no way is a complete fighter at this point in his career.

Herring is a very top level fighter. Herring is an MMA fighter who practices wrestling, sambo and muay thai. He currently lives in Las Vegas and trains at the Xyience Training center while Lesner trains with the Minnesota Martial Arts Academy under Greg Nelson, and University of Minnesota Head Assistant wrestling coach Marty Morgan which is a gloried wrestling club that does MMA. Lesner needs to learn other aspects in MMA fighting like grappling and striking and training. Training with wrestlers at the Minnesota Martial Arts will not make Lesner a well rounded fighter.

Betting wise people love the persona of Brock Lesner. He is a big star, a larger than life figure and people will bet on him at most online sportsbooks because they know him thought the media. This is reflected in the online betting lines with a huge +260 UFC betting line. If you know mixed martial arts there is no way Lesner should be that big a favorite or a favorite at all. This is a perfect MMA bet to place on the underdog as Herring has too much skill, experience and knowledge that Lesner just doesn’t have.

Yes Brock has better wrestling skills but can he tie striking and grappling with his wrestling? Not against a cagy fighter like Herring who will avoid his shoot attempts with strikes to back Lesner off.

Bottom Line: The question is still out of Lesner can really fight, can really last more than one round, can grapple and can he strike. Well we know Herring can fight as he went 10 minutes with the top pound for pound fighter in the Fedor Emelianenko and almost KO’ed current UFC heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. Who has Brock fought? He fought Frank Mir and made a rookie mistake. When Mir had Lesner in the heel hook Lesner did a classic mistake and panicked by trying to run away instead of turning into Mir. Any white belt Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighter knows that. Lesner has the grappler skills and technique that a four strip white belt maybe has and Herring has 16 submission victories throughout his career.

Ww all know who Brock Lesner is. He is a WWE star who has headlined pay per view WWE events and is idolized by many hardcore WWE fans. Most of Herrings fights have been in Japan where most casual sports bettors and MMA fans have never heard or seen Herring fight. I’m here to tell you he can fight and can beat Lesner in front of his home town crowd.

Take Herring for a good pay out at +210 against an still unproven fighter
