UFC Welterweight fight: Josh Koscheck vs. Chris Lytle
Chris “Lights Out” Lytle (25-15-5) is a much better fighter than the online sportsbooks are making him out to be. He has a real opportunity to get back into the UFC welterweight picture with a win over top ten fighter Josh Koscheck (12-2).
Josh Koscheck is a good fighter but at a -345 he is no where near that big a favorite in this fight as the sports betting sites proclaim. Yes he should be a favorite but Lytle has better skills in the stand up and better submission grappling skills.
Most of Lytle’s loses have come by strikers and when he fights wrestlers he does a pretty good job. Chris Lytle has excellent technical striking skills, great grappling skills and coming from the mid west has a background in wrestling. Lytle is no where near as accomplished as Koscheck in wresting, does he have the fundamental skills to compete in a wrestling match. Also, Lytle has great kick boxing technique that can back Koscheck when he tries to shoot in. His kicks combined with his professional boxing fundamentals will keep Koscheck at bay in this fight.
Koscheck is a ground and pound fighter that likes to take his opponents down and gain top control and win from the top. Lytle has the ability on the ground to reverse him and submit him. In the stand up Lytle has the ability to throw off Koscheck and with his superior technical fighting. Koscheck’s stand up style is that he is a chucker. This means he likes to throw wild looping over hand punches. Since Lytle has a boxing background his punches are far crisper. When he throws punches it will landed quicker than Koscheck’s looping punches.
Once Koscheck realizes he is losing the standup battle he will try to take Lytle down. Wrestling wise, Ksocheck shots attempts will be successful but once on the ground Lytle does have the submission skills to threaten Koscheck. In his 25 victories 17 have come by submission.
Bottom Line: Josh Koscheck has gained tremendous skills since coming from Season 1 of TUF but he will be fighting a very experienced fighter in Chris Lytle who is always competitive and game. He has fought everyone and his style is a bad matchup for Koscheck’s game as he can adapt to either a striking or ground game. He has fought great strikers like Joe Riggs at UFC 55 - Fury, Aaron Riley, and Kazuo Misaki and good ground fighters. The knock on Lytle is that he has trouble beating top level opponents like Matt Hughes, Matt Serra, Karo Parisyan, and Nick Diaz. Is Josh Koscheck at the level of who has beaten Lytle? I don’t think so at this point in his career.
Koscheck is still a one dimensional boring fighter and stepping up to face Lytle will be a hard task for him. He has superior wrestling skills and has gained a lot as a MMA fighter but he will be facing a very tough well rounded fighter. The UFC betting lines have Koscheck as a huge advantage and as a UFC online bettor I would take advantage of this bet and place a lot on Lytle who at +275 is a great bet to make. Again the online odds makers fail to look at other factors in a fighter other than his MMA record. Online sports bettors can capitalize on their ignorance and gain a pretty penny at the same time.
Look for Lytle to win a three round decision
