UFC Lightweight fight: Jorge Gurgel vs. Cole Miller

Again why is Jorge Gurgel (12-3) fighting in the UFC? We have said time and time again that Jorge Gurgel has no business being in the UFC. He is only in there because he is friends with Rich Franklin.

Gurgel is a small fighter that has incredible heart but it is his heart that gets him into trouble when he fights. He really should be fighting in the WEC to become a better mixed martial arts fighters as opposed to trying to fight better established fighters. When you look at a fighter you can tell what their primary style of martial arts they have. With Gurgel he tries to do too much when he fights and that hurts his game more than confusing his opponent. Gurgel’s fight style is all over the place and he is not really good at one particularly aspect of fighting and never focuses on his strength. In all of his fights he tries to strike with opponents but he is too short and ineffective to do any damage.

Gurgel’s first 10 fights he fought were fighters that were inexperience. His only true test was a fight in Japan versus Masakazu Imanari at ZST - Grand Prix Opening Round. Well Gurgel lost to a heel hook in 32 second of the first round. Since signing with the UFC, he has had 5 fights and all of them have been decided by decision. Gurgel could not even finish off TUF show fighter Danny Abbadi and Diego Saraiva as he won by decision.

Gurgel fight’s all over the place and tries to stand and strike with fighters but that only gets him in trouble. If his tries to strike with Cole “Magrino” Miller (13-2) he will get hurt. Miller is a deceptive striker with real long limbs and he will be able to use his reach against a short fighter. Miller will also be able to use his long legs to back off Gurgel with high leg kicks and lower leg kicks. If Gurgel think he can stand and trade shots with Miller he will be beaten badly.

Jorge has left Ohio and traveled to Seattle Washington to train at AMC with Matt Hume which means he wants to work on his wrestling skills. This means that Gurgel will want nothing to do with fighting Miller in the standup and will want to take him down to the ground. First is will take a lot for such a smaller body to take Miller down as Miller is 6 foot 2 and will have huge height advantage. If Gurgel tries to shoot in to all Miller will have to do is sprawl his long legs out. Should he take Miller down a ground and pound attack will be ineffective since Cole will use his long limbs to push off Gurgel.

On the ground Miller has a very active guard and uses his hips on the ground to move and transition into various submission attempts. Miller trains at American Top Team with some of the best submission fighters in the world like Marcus Aurelio and Marcus Conan Silveira. His ground game is probably better than Gurgel as he train with many of the top ATT fighters. He also trains with Marcus Aurelio who knows Gurgel and his weaknesses.

Bottom Line: Does Gurgel have been striking skills than Miller? No. Does Gurgel have been wrestling skills than Miller? Maybe. Does Gurgel have been grappling skills than Miller? No. Miller will control this fight from start to finish. I am surprised the UFC betting lines are not more in favor of Miller so I would lay a lot of units on this fights. Place you online sport bet on Miller before the odds makers realize that the lines are not where they should be.

Gurgel was given his black belt in BJJ from Marcus Aurelio, but Aurelio is 34 years old and Gurgel is 31. Normally you get a black belt from a person you have been training with for a number of year not a friend of yours who is very close to in age. So is Gurgel a real BJJ black belt. Who knows? He has trained with many other good Brazilian Jujitsu fighters in the past but has he trained enough to deserve a black belt when he just moves around from place to place?

Gurgel will be confused the entire fight and this is the worst match up he could possibly want. The body frame of Miller will throw off his game and once this fight hits the ground Miller use his long limbs to transition from submission attempt to submission attempt because Gurgel does not have a tight ground game. He is very loose and his base is not as tight as it should be. He tries to do too many high risk moves on the ground.

Cole Miller will put a beating on Gurgel in the stand up and once this fight hits the ground Gurgel will not be about get out of Millers multiple submission attempts. After this fight Gurgel should reevaluate his fight game and perhaps go down to the WEC where there are smaller bodies and less competitive fighters for him to fight.

Miller wins with a second round submission
