UFC Welterweight fight: Matt Hughes vs. Thiago Alves
After getting demoralized in his last fight versus Georges St Pierre Matt Hughes looks to rebound and get back on track against Thiago Alves. Matt Hughes (41 -6 ) the world’s best ever UFC welterweight champion will now headline UFC 85 that will be held on June 7, 2008 at The O2 arena in London, England.
Prior to Matt Hughes fight with GSP he was having difficulties in his training as he left Miletich Fighting Systems to start his own club and Team Hughes. Hughes left the Miletich camp with Robbie Lawler, longtime boxing coach Matt Pena, and wrestling/conditioning teacher Marc Fiore to form The H.I.T.(Hughes Intensive Training) Squad in Granite City, Illinois. While he was preparing for GSP he did not have proper training partners, a stable lease on his new club and was not in the mind set to properly train for a big time mixed martial arts fight. No matter I still think GSP would have still won but now that he is fighting Thiago Alves, he now has everything in place and can only concentrate on Thiago Alves rather than outside business factors.
People might think Hughes is done in his career but he still is one of the best MMA fighters in the 170 pound division. He has fought everyone from Georges St. Pierre at UFC 79: Nemesis, UFC 65: Bad Intentions and UFC 50: The War of '04, Chris Lytle, BJ Penn at UFC 63: Hughes vs. Penn and UFC 46: Supernatural, Frank Trigg, Renato Verissimo, Royce Gracie, Hayato Sakurai, Akihiro Gono, and Sean Sherk. In the welterweight division Hughes has done it all. He has fought top level grapplers, top level strikers, and top level wrestlers and has beaten them all. He has 41 wins and has seen it all and fought every type of style a fighter could fight. Grappling wise Hughes has competed in the ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship with wins over Ricardo Almeida and Jeremy Horn.
Hughes will be fighting Thiago “Pit Bull” Alves who will be one of the best strikers Hughes has every faced. Alves is 13 and 3 and his recent upset over Karo Parisyan at UFC Fight Night 13 has catapulted him to UFC title contention. He also has wins over Chris Lytle at UFC 78 - Validation, Tony DeSouza at UFC 66 - Liddell vs Ortiz II, Marcus Davis and Fabio Holanda. A win over the UFC legend Matt Hughes will put Alves in line for a welterweight title shot after the St Pierre/Fitch fight at UFC 87.
Alves is known for his hard hands and being a well rounded jujitsu fighter. He is currently associated and trains with American Top Team. In recent days ATT is not what the club use to be. If you read my UFC 84 betting match up between Wilson Gouveia versus Goran Reljic you can review observations I have made on ATT. Though I think Alves is a better disciplined fighter than Wilson Gouveia the problems at ATT and training are something that needs to be worked out.
Alves has the definite striking advantage and he has the ability to rush in and knock out Hughes at anytime but Hughes will be training with Robbie Lawler who is a far more dangerous striker than Alves and anything Alves has Lawler will have already prepared Hughes for. Alves has not far so well with mid western fighters and especially MAM fighters with a background in wrestling. He has lost to Jon Fitch at UFC - Ultimate Fight Night 5 who has a wrestling background and to Spencer Fisher at UFC - Ultimate Fight Night 2 who is a Miletich Martial Arts style fighter. Styles make matchups and this is a bad fight for Alves who has not been able to beat this style of fighter. Four of Alves' last five fights have been by knock out; however, he will not be able to KO Hughes.
Bottom line: Hughes is still a top level fighter and Alves' pressure will not throw Hughes off in his game plan. Hughes has far superior wrestling skills and he will use his strength to take Alves down. One thing about BJJ fighters is that you can take them down to the ground. Hughes will take Alves down and be able to control him on the ground and be able to ground and pound him out. Hughes has enough grappling skills to deflect any submission attempts.
Alves will be a great fighter one day but he is still young and at only 24 needs to mature still as a fighter. His style is to rush in and be like a pit bull but after a while Hughes will withstand this and be able to take him to the ground. Believe me, Hughes is not done with MMA and he has more natural strength that you can only get from wrestling and working on the farm. Hughes is a complete fighter, and throughout his 41 MMA victories he has 14 wins by knockout and 18 wins by submission so stand up or ground Hughes can pull off a victory.
Hughes schools Alves with experience and a ground and pound for a second round TKO.
