UFC Middleweight fight: Nathan Marquardt vs. Thales Leites
Right now Nathan “The Great” Marquardt (26 – 7 – 2) is still the second best middleweight in the UFC; by a far margin. Nathan Marquardt is a seven-time middleweight King of Pancrase Champion and trains at Jackson's Submission Fighting, which makes him one of the most well rounded fighters in the middleweight division.
For online UFC bettors, the UFC sports betting lines are the way they are because Marquardt is just that good. At -170 the UFC odds are not that great but to me betting on Marquardt seems like a lock.
Thales Leites (12 – 1) is an up and comer in the mixed martial arts world but he will be facing an experienced fighter and Leites has not fought the level of competition that Marquardt has. Leites biggest strength is his grappling skills and he will be facing one of the best grapplers in the world. Marquardt has fought in the ADCC and is a very good grappler and has beaten some great grappling fighters like Jeremy Horn at UFC 81 - Breaking Point, and Dean Lister at Ultimate Fight Night 8. He has also fought some great fighters like the best pound for pound fighter in the world Anderson Silva and beaten some great strikers like Kazuo Misaki, Shonie Carter, Daiju Takase, and Yves Edwards.
Leites has not fought any top level middleweight fighters as his best victory has come over Jose Landi-Jons. Out of Leites’ 12 victories 8 of them have come by submission so all accounts lead this to be a ground fight. If this fight goes to the ground this will be Marquardt’s fight as he is much better on the ground than Leites. Marquardt was the 1999 World Vale Tudo Federation Champion and Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Ricardo Murgel and a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Ricardo Murgel. Marquardt learned from one of the best BJJ instructors in the world as Ricardo Murgel is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts instructor from Brazil. He holds the rank of Master and a Black Belt level of 7th Degree under Grandmaster Flavio Behring.
Leites is the better striker in this fight but both men prefer to go on the ground. I don’t see a huge advantage in Leites’ striker since Marquardt has been training stand up with Keith Jardine, David Loiseau, Joey Villasenor, and Roger Huerta. The only KO loss in Marquardt’s career has been by Anderson Silva and Leites is no Anderson Silva.
When it comes to MMA most fans only have seen Marquardt in a couple of mixed martial arts fights but when is comes to MMA his accomplishments run deep as he was the 1999 World Vale Tudo Federation Champion, 1999 I.M.A. Rumble In The Rockies Champion, 1999 Bas Rutten Invitational 4 Lightweight Champion, 2000 Ring of Fire Middleweight Champion and 2002 Pancrase Spirit Tour Champion.
Bottom Line: This will be a ground battle and Nathan Marquardt is just a better grappling. He is also coming into the fight as the bigger fighter and he will be able to use his weight and size top control Leites.
Right now Marquardt is very determined to be another crack at Anderson Silva and he has upped his training to become the best fighter. Not only has he been training with the crew at Jackson Fighting submission with the likes of Rashad Evans, Keith Jardine, David Loiseau, Joey Villasenor, and Roger Huerta but he has also been training with Georges St. Pierre and Denis Kang as well.
Take Marquardt for a second round submission victory.
