UFC Light heavyweight fight: Fabricio Werdum vs. Brandon Vera
The best fight of the night will be Fabricio “Vai Cavalo” Werdum vs. Brandon “The Truth” Vera. Both fighters have been highly regarded as possible UFC heavyweight contenders and both fighters have the skills to be great fighters.
However, Vera is not at the level Werdum is and a UFC bettor this is a great under dog bet to make as the online sports betting sites has Werdum listed as a +145 at Bookmaker.com and at most online sports betting sites. I would take this be any day of the week. The North American audience is use to seeing Vera being hyped up in the UFC marketing machine and the UFC betting lines have reflected this. As a UFC bettor you have to ask yourself, who has Vera fought in the past and does he have the overall MMA skills that the UFC says he has. I have to say that Vera does not have the pedigree in fighting like Werdum and Werdum is a much better overall fighter in all aspects of fighting.
Fabricio Werdum (10 - 3) has more experience and has better grappling skills and is a two-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion, 2007 ADCC world heavyweight champion, European Jiu-Jitsu champion. He also has a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and a Brown Belt in judo which make his grappling very lethal and the deciding factor in this fight. Werdum has way more mixed martial arts fighting experience with very high quality opponents and has beaten Aleksander Emelianenko, Alistair Overeem at PRIDE - Total Elimination Absolute, Gabriel Gonzaga (twice) and Roman Zentsov at PRIDE - Final Conflict 2005. His loses have been to top level fighters like Andrei Arlovski (which he should have won) and top ten heavyweights Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Sergei Kharitonov.
When it comes to grappling there is no question as who is the better fighter as Werdum has fought in high level submission grappling tournaments all over the world with results while Vera has never fought in any major tournament. Vera fights with Alliance MMA which is a decent school but there are no fighter in that club that can push him while Werdum trains with Chute Boxe Academy which is known for being extremely aggressive and physical, as well as well-rounded fighters, able to use submissions, punches, kicks, and various grappling styles.
Because Werdum trains at Chute Boxe the striking advantage many think Vera has over Werdum is not as wide as people think. Werdum has excellent lower leg kicks that will be a major factor in this fight. Vera has much better technical boxing skills but this will be nullified due to Werdum’s kicks in this fight.
Brandon Vera (6 -1) is still very inexperience in the mixed martial arts game and he has not fought the top level opponents like Werdum has. Vera’s crack at a top level fighter was a disappointing loss to Tim Sylvia at UFC 77 - Hostile Territory. His other wins over Assuerio Silva at UFC 60 - Hughes vs. Gracie, Justin Eilers at UFC 57 - Liddell vs Couture 3, Fabiano Scherner, Mike Whitehead, Andre Mussi, Don Richard, and Adam Rivera have been against lesser quality fighters. His one victory over a top heavyweight came against Frank Mir at UFC 65 - Bad Intentions, but Mir came into that fight overweight and after his motorcycle injury. If Mir faced Vera today the outcome would be a different story.
Bottom line: Werdum can win from any position and he proved his striker ability with TKO victories over Gabriel Gonzaga and he has been training stand up with Mirko Cro Cop. If Werdum is taken shots from Cro Cop no striking that Vera has will faze Werdum in this fight. Just look at Werdum’s last MMA opponents (Gabriel Gonzaga, Andrei Arlovski, Aleksander Emelianenko, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Alistair Overeem, Jon Olav Einemo, Sergei Kharitonov, Roman Zentsov, Tom Erikson and Ebenezer Fontes Braga). Now if you compare that to Vera’s fights you can see the level of difference. Take the under dog Werdum at +145 for a good pay out.
Werdum wins with take points and will punish Vera for two rounds before stopping him in the third round.
