UFC light heavyweight fight: Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou vs. Kazuhiro Nakamura

Two great judo fighters will square off and both fighters lost on their UFC debut and badly need a win to stay alive in not only the light heavyweight division but the UFC as well.

Right now the online betting odds for this MMA fight are not posted at most online sportsbook for UFC sports bettors but the UFC betting lines should be around even since this will be a closely contested fight. As online sports bettor I would lay a lot on the money line on the “African Assassin” Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou (4-2) for the fight.

Sokoudjou (4-2) got worked by Lyoto Machida at UFC 79: Nemesis who took Sokoudjou to the ground and beat him like he stole something from him. Once the fight hit the ground, Lyoto Machida was having his way with him unitl he was able to submit him with an arm triangle. Sokoudjou had no base and could never regain guard or half guard as Machida went from submission attempt to submission attempt. This will be a different fight for Sokoudjou who has more power than Nakamura and his stand up is far better and more powerful than Nakamura’s.

In the UFC, Japanese fighters have not faired so well in the octagon and Nakamura’s first fight in the UFC not very exciting. Nakamura has better fundamental judo skills and is a very game fighter but he has problems with stronger more powerful fighters in the past. He has loses to Mauricio Rua  at PRIDE - Shockwave 2006, Josh Barnett at PRIDE 31 – Dreamers, Wanderlei Silva at PRIDE - Critical Countdown 2005, Dan Henderson at PRIDE 28 - High Octane  and twice to Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at PRIDE - Bushido 4  and PRIDE 25 - Body Blow.

Nakamura is a good fighter but not a great fighters and he is not a finisher as 10 of his 18 fights have come by decision which shows he can fight with the top level fighters in the world but can never dominate or overpower fighters when he fights. Sokoudjou trains with Dan Henderson at Team Quest and Henderson has already beaten Nakamura, so Sokoudjou will have inside information on how to fight Nakamura. Both Dan Henderson and Josh Barnett will give valuable insight to how to fight Nakamura and they both beat him with the same fighting style as Sokoudjou has.

Sokoudjou is a beast and his standup will over power Nakamura in this UFC fight. If this fight goes to the ground Nakamura does have the advantage but Nakamura will be pressured by Sokoudjou aggressive attack. Sokoudjou will attack in the stand up just as how Wanderlei Silva did. After Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou got his butt whipped by Lyoto Machida he has reworked his overall game. Sokoudjou was the 2001 US Open Judo champion, and currently trains with Team Quest where he is acting as a kickboxing and MMA instructor. He trains and instructs at a wrestling club in Mira Mesa which means both his stadn up and wresling will be a better pace than Nakamura. His striking abilities are far superior to Nakamura which will be the deciding factor in this fight. . His fights with Ricardo Arona at PRIDE 34 - Kamikaze and his 24 second KO of Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at PRIDE 33 - Second Coming showed his striking ability and take down offense ability which he will demonstrate against Nakamura at UFC 84.

Bottom Line: Yes Nakamura has fought top level fighters but he does not have the striking ability to beat Sokoudjou and his fighting style is something that will confuse and stifle Nakamura. Sokoudjou is a bigger body and Nakamura is actually better suited to fight at middleweight in stead of light heavyweight. His does not have to cut weight and if he did he would be a bigger stronger body in the middleweight division instead of a smaller body. Nakamura has all the skills to be great but he seems to lack the training and work ethic. Sokoudjou on hand the other has the hard training from the Team Quest camp and his brute strength and power will overwhelm the smaller Japanese fighter.

I see Sokoudjou coming out and charging Nakamura at the sound of the bell just like he did against Ricardo Arona and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. He has good enough standup base to counter any throw Nakamura has for him. The African Assassin will be able to impose his strength and striking ability on Nakamura.

Look for an early KO win by the African Assassin to extends the poor performances by Japanese fighters inthe UFC
