UFC light heavyweight fight: Tito Ortiz vs. Lyoto Machida

Lyoto Machida is the next big thing in the UFC light heavyweight division while The Celebrity Apprentice is too busy dating porn stars, acting perusing other things in his life. This will be the last fight on Ortiz’s UFC contract and Dana White has already said he will not want to resign the Huntington Beach Badboy (15-5-1) as he and Ortiz do not get along as White and Ortiz have been trading shots in the media for years now.

Dana White on Tito

"It's a tough fight for Tito. Tito really hasn't had a significant fight or a significant win in the last couple years, This is his first real big fight in a long time. Tito's out there saying, ‘this fight isn't with me and Lyoto, it's with me and Dana.' No idiot, it's with Lyoto Machida. You're not fighting me. You better be training, you better be doing what you're supposed to be doing."

He said he'll never come back to the UFC as long as I'm running it, Tito's always going to say stupid shit. Every time that guy opens his mouth, dumb shit rolls out, he can't help himself."

White is true in the fact that Tito has not fought a significant fight in a while and he is true that perhaps Tito has not concentrated on MMA fighting with his clothing line, partnership with his girlfriend porn stat Jenna Jamison, and television appearances on the NBC hit show Celebrity Apprentice with Donald Trump. Tito’s mind is not in this fight and even though he may be in shape he will not be in fight shape especially for a hard hitting striker like Lyoto Machida.

Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida (12-0) is an awkward striker and throws punches and kicks from odd angles. Ortiz has problems with heavy strikers in the past and he will not be able to handle the young more powerful Brazilian. Ortiz does not fight well against strikers and his striking ability is average at beat and he will not be able to handle Machida’s kicks. Machida currently fights out of Black House with UFC Middleweight champion Anderson Silva, former UFC Light Heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort, and former PRIDE FC and current UFC Heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira which means his spars with Anderson Silva on a daily basis and learns jujitsu for the best technical fighter in the world in Nogueira. Machida has a karate background but he has translated that style effectively into MMA.

Ortiz has a great ground and pound and should he take Machida down, Machida will be able to fight effectively on his back. He dominated judo master Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou at UFC 79: Nemesis who was also more powerful than Machida so Tito power should be nullified as well.

This early in Machida’s career he has already fought and beaten some of the best fighters in the world like Kazuhiro Nakamura at UFC 76: Knockout, David Heath, Sam Hoger, Vernon White, B.J. Penn at K-1 HERO's, Rich Franklin and Stephan Bonnar. Machida is such a complete fighter that his style will pose a lot of problems for Tito.

Tito just hasn’t improved as an MMA fighter. He works hard in training when he is focused but in the UFC octagon it doesn’t translate. Tito is supposedly known for his cardio but his last fight with Rasheed Evans he looked gassed by the third round and was lucky to come out with a draw.

Bottom Line:  Lyoto Machida is an up and coming rising star in the UFC while Tito is just fighting out his contract obligations. This might be Tito’s last fight ever in the UFC and his career might lie in training fighters instead of fighting.

I really don’t see Tito beating Lyoto Machida as his stand up game is weak and he has never been known as a grappler. Machida will be able to defend Ortiz’s shoot attempts and I don’t see any why Ortiz will be able to effectively use his ground and pound. UFC betting wise the betting odds for this fight have Machida as a pretty big favorite but I would lay a large chunk on a Machida win before the UFC betting lines move even more in favor of Machida.

Tito closes out his UFC career with a second round KO loss to Lyoto Machida
