UFC lightweight title fight: Mac Danzig (-550) vs. Mark Bocek (+400)

Mac Danzig (17-4-1) was the winner of the Ultimate Fighter 6, and he is the real thing. He is a well rounded fighter with great stand up striking skills and grappling skills as well. He will be a huge favorite in his fight with the Canadian Mark Bocek.

Mark Bocek (5-1) is no joke as his grappling skills are better than Danzig’s. Bocek is one of Canada's first Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belts studying under Rickson and Renzo Gracie. He then moved on to Nova Uniao where he received his Black Belt through Joao Roque. Grappling wise he has victories over Shawn Williams, Kurt Pellegrino, Jordan Damon, Brian McLaughlin and Wesley "Cabbage" Correira.

Danzig is a much better all round fighter with far superior striking but he will be overwhelmed once this fight goes to the ground.  Besides Georges St Pierre, I see Bocek as the other Canadian that will come out with a victory at UFC 83. As a UFC bettor, the +400 betting odds are too much to pass up. This is the one underdog betting pick to make due to such great betting odds.

Danzig has more experience and fought better opponents but I think the home crowd in Montreal will propel Bocek to a victory. Danzig is not that much better than Bocek but because we are use to seeing him dominate the guys on the Ultimate Fighter reality show we automatically think he will dominate. Well he fought Joe Scarola, John Kolosci, and Tommy Speer in the reality series but I would hardly call these guys great fighters. The TUF finale only showed the disparity between lack of talent between the Danzig and the rest of the house.

When this fight goes to the ground Danzig might not be prepared for Bocek’s skill. Bocek has an incredible grappling resume with numerous awards like:

  • 2007 North American Grappling Championship Advanced Division Absolute Winner
  • 2007 North East Grappling Challenge Champion, 189lbs advanced
  • 2007 ADCC veteran and defeated Drew Fickett 8-0 in the first round
  • 2006 ADCC North American Trials Champion defeating Drew Puzon, Rob Kahn, Don Ortega and Mike Fowler
  • 2006 NAGA Ohio Championships 150-159 lb no-gi advanced Champion and the under 175 lb Black Belt Champion
  • 2005 Grapplers Quest Southeast Grappling Championships no-gi pro Silver medalist and 2005 Copa Atlantica Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Championships Black Belt division Silver Medalist
  • 2005 Bravado Champion, advanced and absolute
  • ADCC Canadian Trials Champion in 2002 and 2004
  • 2003 Brasilia State Champ (Brown Belt)
  • 2002 Grapplers Quest U.S. National Champion
  • 2002 World Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Champion
  • 3X Pan American Medalist in 1999, 2000 and 2002
  • 5X Canadian Champion: 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2001
  • 1999 NAGA Champion, Closed division with Joe D'arce and Shawn Williams

Danzig has no where near the grappling experience and his key to winning is the stand up but if this goes to the ground it is anyone’s game. Also Bocek is a natural middleweight and he will be fighting in the lightweight division, so going into the fight he will be the bigger and stronger fighter. Being the bigger fighter he will be able to have better base and control if this fight goes to the ground.

Bottom Line: Mac Danzig is definitely the favorite in this fight and being a -550 at most online sports betting sites it seems a little high to me. This is a great online mixed martial arts bet to make. As a UFC bettor I can not pass up on a +400 UFC betting odds for this fight.

If you are going to bet a UFC dog this is the one to make. The UFC has hyped Danzig and the online sportsbooks are judging him as a money line favorite based on what they see on the UFC reality show. Bocek will have the home crowd with him and that might just be enough for him to pull off the upset. We have seen greater betting odds lose like Shogun and the first GSP fight. I can see an upset in MMA fight on April 29.

Bocek wins by submission with a second round upset victory over Danzig
