UFC Heavyweight mixed martial arts fight: Cheick Kongo -155 vs. Heath Herring +125
Heath “The Texas Crazyhorse” Herring (27-13-1) as an underdog is a great bet to make against a very one dimensional fighter in Cheick Kongo. The French Sensation who is 11-3-1 is the online sports bettors’ odds on favorite by most sportsbooks to win over Herring at -155. Now ask yourself why? That’s what I am trying to figure out. Cheick Kongo has had one impressive win in the UFC. His win over Cro Cop was very impressive at UFC 75: Champion vs. Champion but they fought in a stand up fight. Judging by that one fight, online sportsbooks are thinking Kongo will easily beat Herring.
I’m telling you he will not.
Heath Herring has fought some of the best fighters in mixed martial arts like Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Mirko Filipovic, Fedor Emelianenko at Pride 23. He has wins over Brad Imes at UFC 69: Shootout, Gan McGhee, Igor Vovchanchyn at Pride 19, Mark Kerr, Enson Inoue, Tom Erikson and Evan Tanner. Herring has great stand up skills and on the ground he can hold his own, He has fought way better strikers like Vovchanchyn and he almost beat Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 73: Stacked.
Kongo has been fighting in martial arts since he was 5 years old, following his brother into Kendo and Karate. Kongo has great leg kicks and is a much better kick boxer but this is a MMA match and Kongo is very suspect on the ground. Kongo has been training at Juanito Ibarra with Quinton Jackson and Michael Bisping who are obvious good strikers but he does not need to work on his stand up game, he needs to work on the ground game. Juanito Ibarra has collected some of the best strikers in the game but is not known as a great ground school. Out of all his wins his most notable has been against Cro Cop who by all accounts was not mentally prepared for that match. He is a physical specimen and has the length and reach advantage over Herring but Heath will be able to counter his leg kicks for a takedown which is something that Cro Cop did not attempt.
Bottom Line: Heath Herring is just way more experienced and I feel that he has overcome the Pride curse in the UFC and will use his experience and savvy to beat Kongo. Once he takes Kongo on the ground he will be able to dominate the bigger slower fighter. Herring can take a punch and he will be able to keep his distance to avoid Kongo’s leg kicks. Herring will wait until the right moment before his shoots in. Also don’t underestimate Herring kick boxing skills.
Kongo just has not worked enough on his ground game and Herring will move around and wait for the perfect time to attack. I like Herring chances in this game and as a UFC bettor this is a great dog pick at +125.
